JOBS GROWTH! JOBS! wait.... one more time JOBS! Good paying ones too! NO timmies or mickie dee's please? My taxes increased this year. So where's the beef? Taxing was supposed to be of help. I guess not! 2012 is drawing near end. Cant wait for the next tax increase in 2013. When I was not able to claim property taxes on income taxes this year. What is the point of these extra taxes collected? Your governement isn't even allowing much more of any transfer payments to you city hallers anymore. I guess its time to milk the public once again with tax increases and broken promises at a good ole fashioned town hall meeting. How truly DISFUNCTIONAL we are at coucil chambers and as a corporation , city of SSM!

save your breath people.....they have never listened before so why would they start now.....???? this is all smoke and mirrors to help justfy their overly paid part time positions........So here is a start.......WHY DO WE NEED 12 COUNCILLORS how about cutting that in half to 6 councillors. why do we need two in each zone?....that to me is a total waste of my money......twelve councillors PLEASE........ Can any councillor out there actual state one thing that they have done to help this city????one thing and that doesnt include sitting on some rediculous committee for three or four years to study something..that would be an actual act by them that benefitted this community????I cant wait to see all the responses on that one....it will be a great big ZERO!!!!!!!!!!!!City councillors are the biggest waste of our money at city hall and thats a fact............

Revitalize the downtown area and breathe life into the dilapidated old buildings and houses that are currently nice little pockets for crime downtown.

Increase tourism spending, finish the gateway project, build an IMAX and new casino/entertainment/hotel/convention complex. Get outsiders interested in the Soo again!

Build the infrastructure first and then jobs will come naturally to those who actually go to school and care about their future...not to those who feel that community spending will automatically give them jobs!

Wake up people. Stop with your sense of entitlement...work hard and you will be rewarded.

I can agree with more jobs!! and better wages!! It makes no sense to me that I have a college diploma yet I am still working at the same job as I was at 15. I am in my 30's. I would have to accept part time at minimum wage for any job related to my accredited diploma!
Stevie-E 10/16/2012 4:30:27 PM Report

@Posh

Maybe you should try something else if you're still working the same job.

It's called moving out of town or going back to school for something that is in demand. Jobs just don't appear out of thin air, but something tells me you already know that...you're educated!

Adapt or die!
speed7 10/16/2012 4:31:17 PM Report

Well they are hosting a meeting? If they wanted any of us to shut up they would'nt ask for opinions? Would they? Its not in everyone's forte to run for council. People want to see progress. Why would anyone say shut up to people making suggestions and looking for Progress? I say placing limits to yourself isn't going to produce any fruitful results. People need to put their heads together and say ... you know what?.... this just isnt working anymore? How about getting this city kick started get the attention of our government. Their is Voice and strength and resonance in numbers. If we all shut up ! Nothing gets done. I think what you really are saying then, is not just shut up but to shut everyone out! That sounds like city council mentality as it always has been for too many years.
jim 10/16/2012 4:40:37 PM Report

City hall can't create jobs...especially without raising taxes.....keep it within the city's realm. I vote for fix the streets streets streets
speed7 10/16/2012 4:47:13 PM Report

Stevie E What jobs are in demand? What? Like call centers? I dont think you realized what posh was saying? Far too many people with univeristy degrees living here and doing the same as posh so what do you mean go out of town get educated again and for what? Washing dishes. Its not people who need to change. its the infrastructure that needs to change.
speed7 10/16/2012 4:49:04 PM Report

Jim, well they sure as hell have raised my taxes?
Poshkitty 10/16/2012 6:43:44 PM Report

Thanks Speed7! ...this may boggle some minds...might even get some people worked up in here! I recieved my college education from the second career funding! Sound familiar? Guess how the government funds the program!? Hard working tax money! I took the opportunity to make the best of it! Studied hard...achieved a 4.0 gpa...upon graduating I applied to every job that had an open position, still applying! My point is...The government created the second career funding and the long tenured worker programs to get the unemployed back to work! now like Speed7 says...the lack of infrastructures is the problem! The government is wasting tax money if they can't get those who participated in the program jobs upon graduating!!
speed7 10/16/2012 11:29:31 PM Report

posh that's beause the job position has been filled before even the interviews take place. Its just a formality.

Here is another good one for you. Many years ago they had what is called a wage subsidy program for retraining in a chosen field. But they allowed students to get trained at all these accelerated learning schools called career colleges. They were never designated as an accredited college under government standards. You think our government would know that ahead of time? Therefore, money spent on training and you could not land a job in the government or in some cases elsewhere as a result. If the training was at Sault College, no problem. Yet the subsidy program would not send you to Sault College inorder to cut costs. The sault has has had a very poor job base here for many years? However I know that those career colleges had specific hands on training which sault college didnt. It was excelerated yes but you really had to work hard to achieve the results that someone at sault college would after 3 years of schooling. Plus the training was way better. I think there is too much beaurocracy in this city. The government is very disfunctional that does not make for good decisions bieng made.

Jim I do realize city councils hands are tied somewhat but they do have a voice with our elected officials and they could, for once use it!
If you read my post properly you would have seen that I said they raised my taxes as well as everyone elses probably. Its been going up for the last 17 years.
Stevie-E 10/17/2012 12:40:31 PM Report

@speed

Thanks for your input but I know many people who go to school thinking there will be a job waiting for them in the Soo when they are done. I have never found an issue finding a jobe because I had the foresight not to specialize in any particular thing and work several jobs before my current career, gaining knowledge in a broad area. I don't think you understood what I was saying. If you're educated in a particular area and you haven't found work in that field, you need to leave!

It's a small town, jobs are not unlimited in supply. So like I said...adapt (LEAVE) or die. I think many people complaining of not work are complacent and lazy.

You're right about one thing and was stated in my first post: investment in the city for tourism, etc. is in need of attention.

And YES! People need to change to the marketplace. It has always been that way and it's called supply and demand.
speed7 11/2/2012 12:06:09 PM Report

Steive I have never had a hard time finding work. Your assumptions are truly just that assumptions. I never fed off the social system either. I am very independant person. Nor I do not need to leave. ,that is the whole problem with people like you assuming people with an education need to leave. |I think you just clearly do not understand that many people have left already. Anyways lets just leave it at that. I am not leaving so YOU LEAVE FIRST. We do not need square heads like you who try to fit themselves into a round hole.
speed7 11/2/2012 12:11:54 PM Report

And take your pompous attitude with you when you leave!
