McGuinty quitting as Ontario Premier amid growing spending scandal
Monday, October 15, 2012 by: Rick McGee
Dalton McGuinty will be stepping down as Ontario's Premier.
McGuinty will remain in the position until a Liberal leadership convention has selected a successor.
The announcement was made early this evening during an emergency Liberal caucus meeting.
After leaving the top job, McGuinty will remain as the MPP for Ottawa South, at least until the next election.
Ontario's 24th Premier first led the provincial Liberals to power in 2003.
Reelection followed in 2007.
A year ago the McGuinty Liberals won again, but were reduced to minority status.
Today's surprise move comes as controversies around cancelled southern Ontario gas-fired power plants grow.
The Conservatives have accused McGuinty and the Liberals of wasting as much as $640-million of taxpayers' money on the politically driven decisions.
Other accusations claim the Liberals are hiding many related details.
In addition, Energy Minister Chris Bentley is waiting to find out if the Finance Committee will find him in contempt of Parliament.
The McGuinty government has also faced extensive criticism over extensive air ambulance and e-health bungling.
In a message posted on the Ontario Liberals' website, McGuinty says: "In every area that matters most to families - their schools, their health care, their environment and their economy - we've made huge progress.
"We’ve gone from struggling schools to the best schools in the English-speaking world ...
"From Canada’s longest health-care wait times, to the shortest …
"From dirty air to clean air …
"And the toughest drinking water standards, anywhere."
Later, McGuinty adds: "We've positioned Ontario for decades of success."

Dictionary 10/15/2012 9:01:40 PM Reportha. we get it justin. tow that line buddy.
I'm In 10/15/2012 9:04:21 PM Reportyvonny: he is stepping down has Premier because he has a minority so he can't do what he wants without the other parties having a say, hell he even offered PC Elizabeth Witmer a position in his govenment to put her Kitchener-Waterloo riding up for a bye-election in Sept. 2012 so he could get a majority, but the Lib. Canidate their lost it to the NDP. McGuinty did have a majority in his first term but with all his party screw ups he barely got in power last election, this is the demise of the Ontario Liberals, what do you think of that Justin Liberal T.
P.S. Just like Federal Liberals a bunch of crooks
clane 10/15/2012 9:12:22 PM Reportjust waiting for the statement that this is all the fault of the Government employees and their Unions for not doing their part to help him balance the books.

archer 10/15/2012 10:03:04 PM ReportThank God he is finally going! Unfortunatly, he will collect an excellent pension even though he buried Ontario in debt.
He lied to get into power....saying that he would lower taxes....but he ended up raising them shortly after taking office.
The irony of the situation is that the Ontario voting public re-elected the ass-hole!!!
Dictionary 10/15/2012 10:07:54 PM Reporti wager he joins the conservatives in the future. his union busting, and proroguing to avoid the wrath of the opposition over the southern power boondoggle is a page straight out of the federal conservative books.

McGuinty has GOT to kidding!
Justin Tetreault 10/15/2012 10:12:56 PM Report"Unfortunatly, he will collect an excellent pension even though he buried Ontario in debt."
MPPs don't have pensions.
Snowdon 10/15/2012 10:16:32 PM ReportMeh, whoever is next will have either the same people, or a different segment of the population, thinking the exact same way about them as most of the comments here.
Just the nature of being in politics, guaranteed a good chunk of society will like you and a good chunk will blame you for everything they don't like. The circle of life continues.
medsec 10/15/2012 10:26:43 PM ReportDoes this mean we can get rid of the smart meters that were shoved down our throats? He is too arrogant to stay premier until the next election because he knows he is toast. He went in with a surplus and he has sucked the province dry, do we get our property tax credit again, or has he spent that too? Good bye McGuinty, you were a real gem. For one of the riches provinces in Canada it is really disgusting.
KDawg 10/15/2012 10:29:54 PM Report"MPPs don't have pensions."
Don't kid yourself Justin. Mike Harris technically ended MPP pensions, but he only replaced it with a different payout system.
MPP's aren't hurting when they leave office.
speed7 10/15/2012 10:40:51 PM ReportJustin,
That's because mike harris took that away in 1995 for MPP's. The only smart thing Harris ever did. But did he really? NO of course not everyone knows that? But this doesnt mean that MPP's are not compensated for each year they are in service and based on annual salary. Compensation packages can be up to half of the MPP's yearly salary. Plus a percentage of salary is put away in th LIRA account for them to accumulate for retirement purposes. After 8 years of service the compensation is increased to one and a half times their yearly salary. That can be in excess of 200,000 a year in compensation. Not a bad retirement plan? Even thought technically its not. Behold the beauty of deception my friend!

speed7 10/15/2012 10:53:54 PM ReportI think everyone who works in Canada should be entitled to a private pension plan. I dont care what kind of work you do. Part time, full time, contract, any work needs to entitles you to a full pension on top of goverment pensions and supplements when retiring at 65 or should I say 67 now? Its never going to be that way because you will have your poor and then there are the cake eaters at the top who have to get fat while you me and the rest of the poor cant put enough food on the table at supper time. Lovely provincial government isnt it? They sure know how to take care of their own dont they?
Prrrrrrr 10/15/2012 11:01:29 PM ReportA dictatorship is run by a dictator who governs a country, or a form of the government in which he or she has complete control or power. Dalton?
speed7 10/15/2012 11:18:38 PM ReportIf you look at past liberal governments. Liberal policy has never involved spending to the hilt and putting the province in such bad shape. You have to look at the government as a whole at all levels. I didnt agree with his taxing and increasing costs of energy. I think his resignation isnt the end of our debt. Only the beginning.
Sault_ont 10/16/2012 12:20:42 AM ReportWho ever They get to Replace McGuinty hope they will avoid Ontario Bill 115.
steelworker 10/16/2012 6:40:48 AM ReportFunny how Charest ran like a chicken in Quebec ( we know now it was because of kickbacks in the construction industry) and now Dilton takes a dive over the generating stations in southern Ontario. Typical Libs-when you get your tits caught in the wringer it's time to take a powder.

goldenvehicle 10/16/2012 7:49:35 AM Reportmaby now we can get our mnr back in canada .instead of creating jobs in the states..
learningaswego 10/16/2012 8:46:40 AM ReportYou can run Dalty, but you can't hide.
Some speculate that you may run for federal Liberal leader.
They would have to lose their marbles completely, to ever let Dalty take the lead there.
The energy scandals Dalty has left us with in Ontario ain't even REALLY started yet, will be front and centre for years, and if the federal Libs ever were dumb enough to pick Dalty, they will wear the scandals with Dalty.
learningaswego 10/16/2012 8:49:48 AM ReportI hope David O bails, and runs for federal Liberal.
David O has been great for the Sault, in spite of the provincial Liberals' follies.

unclemeat 10/16/2012 10:10:43 AM ReportDoes this have anything to do with the MNR Crown land scandal that just emerged?
DOMAR 10/16/2012 10:42:11 AM ReportFilty SOB. He should be hunted down like Momar Kadafi for what destruction he caused in this country. What a total mess. I really feel bad for our kids futures.
speed7 10/16/2012 11:48:48 AM Reportgolden vehicle your right. I hope the mnr gets some jobs back. It has been skimmed way past its sketeton. I wouldnt even call it a skeleton crew ? Not the least bit. Depends whose next, well see.
The problem was deeper in the core of our federal government and it backlashed since harper does not care about us up north. The provinces that make more money are showered with transfer payments. The ones who are less weathly are the provinces harper really could care less about? Distribution of transfer payments get cut down considerably in this case. That is what the term the have and the have not provinces referes to? Realize this people.
steelworker 10/16/2012 3:01:25 PM ReportWhat a dillwad.
