The Honourable Ray Stortini to be Honoured at Algoma University's John R. Rhodes Dinner
SAULT STE. MARIE, ON (October 15, 2012) - Algoma University will be hosting its annual John R. Rhodes Scholarship Dinner on Saturday, November 3, 2012, at the Algoma's Water Tower Inn & Suites, sponsored by RBC Royal Bank and RBC Wealth Management.
This year's dinner will recognize The Honourable Ray Stortini [shown].
The Hon. Ray Stortini began his career as a judge n 1971 in York County (Toronto).
He was appointed to the Algoma District Court in 1976, and in 1990 was appointed as the Justice of the Superior Court of Justice, a post he held until his retirement in 2004.
The Hon. Ray Stortini is well known for having initiated the Community Service Order program, an alternative to jail requiring non-violent offenders to work for charitable institutions in the community.
Beginning in Toronto in 1975, the program spread across the county and as far as Australia.
Stortini's contributions outside of the courtroom are numerous.
He was recently recognized for his contributions to society by receiving the Order of Ontario, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Community Recognition Award.
The John R. Rhodes Scholarship Dinner is held annually to raise funds for the prestigious John R. Rhodes Scholarship.
Established in 1979, the John Rhodes Scholarship is awarded to a local high school graduate who best embodies the integrity, leadership and commitment to community service demonstrated by John Rhodes throughout his life as a broadcaster, community member and politician.
