sounds like an insurance scam.you leave keys in an unlocked vehicle for the second vehicle that is locked??
TankGirl 10/14/2012 11:23:52 AM Report

Insurance will not cover this theft because the keys were found in an unlocked vehicle. Had it been locked and they could prove forced entry, then they would be covered.

Tankgirl,

But, they didn't steal the car that the keys for the second vehicle were in. The keys for the stolen vehicle were found in the 1st vehicle...

TankGirl, you're not necessarily right.

While it will definitely raise more questions, it may still be covered.

You can leave the keys in your own car with the doors unlocked and still be covered for insurance - the insurance companies don't have "stupidity" clauses, if your car was LEGITIMATELY stolen (which may or may not be hard to prove), it's covered.

Although, I'm sure if you did do this, and had any kind of cause/reason, the insurance company would give you a really hard time (e.g. if you were behind on payments).
TankGirl 10/14/2012 7:49:39 PM Report

Working man - when you leave your keys for your vehicle accessable regardless of how they were accessable, insurance is not liable. Meaning, leaving your keys for another vehicle in another unlocked vehicle is as good as handing the thieves the keys. The owner did not assume proper care of the care keys. Had the keys been in a locked car, we're stolen and used to open another vehicle, they would be covered.
TankGirl 10/14/2012 7:53:15 PM Report

Opinionated - unless your insurance company is stupid, no insurance will cover a theft with access vs a break and enter. That's one reason insurance companies are rich.
