Station Mall Walmart Supercentre opens almost without a hitch

Saturday, October 13, 2012   by: Carol Martin

The doors opened for the first time at the new Sault Ste. Marie South Walmart Supercentre in the Station Mall yesterday morning.

Throughout the day things progressed very well - not perfectly but very well - said store Assistant Manager Wally Stubbs.

The brand new staff faced a test by fire as customers flowed into the store in an initial rush and then steady and heavy all day long.

That and there was a brief power outage in about mid-morning.

Of course the brand new staffers got to deal with finicky computers and cash registers all day after the power went down.

"Everyone performed very well," said Stubbs. "There were a few hitches but, overall, I'd call it a success."

He said he was proud of the team of staff at the new store and was confident they would give customers nothing less than the Walmart gold standard of service on an ongoing basis.

The opening of the new store was kicked off with the presentation of a couple big cheques to the new Station Mall Walmart's charities of choice, as well as cake and Wal-Mart's everyday low prices.

Among the most outstanding features of the new store is a small but well-stocked grocery section.

Now, downtown and area residents can shop for fresh produce, meat, fish and dairy products in a close to full-service grocery store with Walmart low prices from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week at Sault Ste. Marie Walmart South in the Station Mall.

Grand opening celebrations continue today with a Walmart Block Party from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

As reported earlier by, store patrons will refreshments and samples.

Make sure to check your receipt from yesterday because there were items that weren't scanning for the same price as what was being advertised on the shelf (bagels, diapers, GV Fruit cups). Had to drive back but it was worth the $20+ back in scanning errors! The staff are definitely being kept on their toes and doing a good job, especially for some of things they've had to deal with!!

I liked all the Crapmart employees I saw smoking right outside the doorways, of the mall

nice observations right winger ;) Guess they haven't disclosed to the employees of the non smoking by-laws!! I'm sure they will work out the kinks once a few fines are handed out!

Was there today - really don't like the lay-out. It's like the grocery dept is in the middle of the store with everything else on the outside. Would have made more sense to me to have the grocery section to one side or a corner of the store.

I went to check the store out last night. I found it to be cluttered and hard to move through. And also found it strange that the grocery section is in the middle of the store. The whole layout of the store is unappealing.

A terrible layout or not, a lot of people love their Wal-Mart. With them having a grocery area, I'm afraid Kelly's might be done.
Tom_Bom 10/13/2012 10:46:38 PM Report

Yeah Kellys probably is done... I mean despite the odd layout and small isle-ways, they're still bringin the goods at a low price.

I found myself generally lost the first time i went in there... its sort of like a maze lol. They've packed so much stuff into a moderately sized space.

None the less that won't stop me from shopping there :) heh

Beggers can't be choosers and guess what...they still have great prices, helpful staff who busted their hump and a great location!!!! Best of luck Walmart. Let's try to keep our spending in Canada. Who cares about isles and grocery more and get to know the store. It'll all work out in the end. I love this ciy!!!!

All I was doing was giving my opinion on the new store. Relax! I like to enjoy my shopping experience when I am at a store spending my money - and that did not happen for me. If you love it there than I happy for you. I respect your opinion and you should learn to respect others'. You state "Beggars can't be choosers" as if you think every single person in this city really wanted or cared to have this second Walmart. I love the Walmart on Great Northern Road and will continue to just go to that one.

Nice to see they have Lock City milk and butter in the store. I prefer to get my milk locally, from farmers in the region.

That's a Win for all of us - keeps them working, and we get to drink milk that we have grown to trust over the years.
