Bay Mills man sentenced in child sexual assault

MARQUETTE, MI - Jay Emerson Hunter, 22, a member of the Bay Mills Indian Community, was sentenced to 360 months in federal prison for aggravated sexual abuse of a child under 12, U.S. Attorney Patrick A. Miles, Jr. announced today.

In addition to the prison term, U.S. District Judge R. Allan Edgar ordered Hunter to serve five years of supervised release following his release from prison and to pay a $100 special assessment.

Upon release from prison, Hunter will be required to register as a sexual offender.

On May 14, 2012, Hunter pleaded guilty to count one of a federal indictment charging him with aggravated sexual abuse of a child under 12.

The charge stemmed from an incident at a residence in Brimley, Michigan, on the Bay Mills Indian Community reservation between fall 2010 and spring 2011.

During this incident, Hunter, who was babysitting the 8-year-old victim, sexually assaulted her.

The incident came to light in June 2011 when the victim told another babysitter what had happened to her.

During the investigation, Hunter admitted to sexually assaulting the victim on three separate occasions.

The Bay Mills Indian Community Tribal Police and the FBI investigated the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Paul D. Lochner and Maarten Vermaat prosecuted the case.

360 months? Why don't they just say 30 years?! lol..
Auntiej 10/12/2012 7:18:55 PM Report

Now that's some serious justice!!!!! Canada can learn a few things.
right wing 10/12/2012 8:19:22 PM Report

That's because the U.S. doesn't coddle those that commit sexual crimes.
This would have brought a pathetic two year sentence at the very most in Canada.
Time-is-Now 10/12/2012 8:53:51 PM Report

way way too much time! The guy is only 22! Probably was abused himself. Two years in jail with strict probation and treatment plan in Canada is realistic. Read Conrad Black's book about the grossly over penalizing U.S. justice system... this is a perfect example
moem 10/12/2012 11:29:43 PM Report

Time is now you are either being sarcastic or you're an idiot!! Two years is NOT enough time that child was just given a life sentence by that sick douche bag! Overcoming sexual abuse is difficult and most victims struggle through many issues including addiction and have a tough time with trust and intimacy, child sexual abuse is a crime that deserves the death penalty, these sick dirt bags cannot be cured... That's not an opinion it is a widely accepted fact... It is a sexual preference you can't change that preference anymore than you can counsel a gay man straight or a straight man gay, plain and simple!!!
geterdun 10/13/2012 3:09:18 AM Report

30 years is a rediculous sentence......
And now who pays for this for the rest of his life??? tax payers do.... do you think he will get any help while he sits in jail? not!!!!!!!!......nobody wins in this......nobody......Sad state of affairs in the USA its just sad how they serve justice:{
celest5 10/13/2012 8:21:40 AM Report

Why do they call it aggravated sexual abuse or just recently, having sex with, when it is called Rape. I knew a young girl who was brutally raped by 5 young men and died, the doctor said she bled internally, Savages.
moem 10/13/2012 8:23:26 AM Report

Geterdun there is no help, so how would you feel if after a couple years he got out and abused a child in your family and yes it costs a lot, though that's why I suggested death penalty for such crimes as they can't truly be rehabilitated,
reliable1 10/13/2012 10:35:26 AM Report

This sentence is totally justified! The USA knows how to serve up justice just fine! That poor little girl. As far as I'm concerned, her parents should get the same sentence for being stupid enough to leave their precious little girl with a 22 year old male babysitter. Now THAT would be ultimate justice! Dumbasses!
speed7 10/13/2012 10:37:20 AM Report

The world today is a pretty scary place. This young girl scarred for life. I think 30 years is good. I think tough sentecing like that is warranted. At least they dont put up with crap not like us here? Americans know how to do things and we dont basically.
mattdoubleU 10/13/2012 10:44:53 AM Report

So stupid, bring on the death penalty for idiots like this. Just kill the f**ker and save the tax payers money, the same should go for ALL murders/diddlers and repeat offenders. None of this life in prison bullsh*t. Also Canada needs to adopt the death penalty, and use it to deal with all the scum in this country. Slaps on the wrist clearly are not working. Be done with them all and maybe our economy will improve.
Stugatzu 10/13/2012 11:06:53 AM Report

The length of the prison sentence doesn't really matter..... there's an unspoken rule amongst prison inmates: you don't do harm to children. The inmates will take justice into their own hands on this guy -- probably make him some 350lb guy's bitch.. before they kill him.
right wing 10/13/2012 11:28:10 AM Report

And doesn't that speak volumes when the crime that this dude committed is viewed by other criminals as the lowest of low.
To the point that they would kill him.
There is always the assumption that the perpetrator was abused also.
There was nothing indicating this in the news article so I shall respond on the basis that he was not.

This young girl has had something torn from her that is irreplaceable, her innocence and her God given right to mature in a natural way, making her own choices when and if.
Her right to discovering loving a member of the opposite sex in a natural way without combating demons brought into her life by an evil self serving pervert.
He only has to serve time until he gets out on parole, most likely 1/3 of his sentence.
How much "time" does his victim serve to become whole again and heal her soul?

GIMME HIS PICTURE!

celest5 10/13/2012 5:59:00 PM Report

Why did this chid have more faith in telling the babysitter what happened, You do have to wonder about that, Why, Why, Why.
moem 10/13/2012 6:41:26 PM Report

Finally some smart comments, though right wing you should have left out the opposite sex part when you spoke of her opportunity to fall in love and discover relationships, could be same sex, either way she is scarred!!!
Working Man 10/13/2012 8:16:53 PM Report

What this guy did was absolutely disgusting. Verbal abuse never solves the situation though.

He deserves 5 years in jail and lots of cognitive behavioural therapy and counselling.

But, then again with all this publicity and verbal assault as well as being marked as a sex offender for the rest of his life; he will NEVER, ever recover from this. So you might as well kill him.
moem 10/13/2012 8:29:09 PM Report

Who cares if he ever recovers from this!!! Do you think that little girl will??? You seem awfully sympathetic to him!! Do you understand how he feels? Got experience sounds like it
moem 10/13/2012 8:40:40 PM Report

Oh and working man... How much counseling would it take to change your sexual preference, assuming of course that it's not children, but let's say for the sake of argument that you are a straight male who likes women over the age of majority..., would 5 yrs in jail and some cognitive therapy make you gay?? Nope nor would it work for gay to straight...So... Why would counseling change this D bag's preference for children? It won't study after study has shown it doesn't "cure them" and children are far too precious to take the risk, if death penalty were legal I assure you I would volunteer ( actually I'd probably pay a fee) to be the one to flip the switch, inject the needle or drop the floor for every single person who abuses a child like that , and I would fall asleep with a big smile EVERY night that I got to do it!!! Lol
quickcarl 10/14/2012 8:25:25 AM Report

how would anybody know whether the accused deserved 2 years or 30 years unless you were right there at the trial to see what exactly happened??
right wing 10/14/2012 12:02:54 PM Report

Why would I have to be at a trial to know exactly what happened.
That is why there are Judges, lawyers, the press and a Justice system.
moem 10/14/2012 12:31:36 PM Report

Not to mention he admitted to doing it 3 times and there are sentences already laid out to fit the crime. Robbing a child of their innocence and ability to trust is one of the worst crimes imaginable for most people he deserves to be locked up for as long as the law allows, and I'm sure he will get his ass pounded literally while he's in there, though that won't help the victim heal but it sure will be poetic !!!
celest5 10/14/2012 3:37:50 PM Report

quickcarl, seems to me you have more compassion for this man, you are sick.
moem 10/14/2012 5:54:11 PM Report

Sick people stick together hmmmm, if it were my child it wouldn't have seen the inside of a court room
