ALGOMA PUBLIC HEALTH
*************************
In recent weeks numerous raw beef and ready-to-eat products have been recalled by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency associated with the XL Foods (Establishment 38) manufacturing facility.
These products have been recalled due to contamination of the product with E.coli 0157:H7.
This type of E.coli is a harmful bacteria that has the potential to make people very ill if consumed.
Algoma Public Health wants to remind the public of how important it is to cook foods to proper internal cooking temperatures.
The only way to measure this temperature properly is using a probe thermometer.
Bacteria that cause food poisoning such as, E.coli 0157:H7 are killed when they are cooked to an internal temperature of 74 C/ 165 F.
When handling any raw meat products keep a separate work space for these products to prevent cross contamination of other foods and surfaces.
Washing your hands before and after handling raw meat products using soap and water and drying them with a disposable paper towel is one of the number one defenses in protecting yourself and your family from food borne illnesses.

screaming@rocks 10/12/2012 2:11:23 PM ReportI'm shocked that Algoma Public Health would allow a press release regarding the Canada wide recall of tainted meat and give us a lesson on proper food handling. I didn't realize the recall was based on poor food prep skills.
BlackHelix 10/12/2012 3:30:15 PM ReportYou're shocked? The lesson on food handling is so you don't die. It's kind of what they do.
moem 10/12/2012 4:03:36 PM ReportI would imagine that public health is reminding people about proper food handling because meat can contain the bacteria and consumers don't know that, the meat was finally caught that came from XL but there could be tainted meat that hasn't been caught. It's better to be safe than sorry and if you cook and handle your food properly the chances of you getting sick are reduced or eliminated even if your beef was tainted. We can't simply stop eating foods simply because we have these recalls and scares, so public health is doing their job and educating people on how to cook and eat safely and as a mother I appreciate the reminders!!! Thanks public health keep up the good work
lowla 10/12/2012 4:11:07 PM ReportIt would be nice to know if any of the tainted beef has been sold at our local stores?
ThinkAgain 10/12/2012 6:08:09 PM ReportI think they're only saying something only because of the related strike issues posted earlier. They need some kind of an excuse.
moem 10/12/2012 11:32:03 PM ReportThink again, why don't you do what your handle suggests, and perhaps think again... Is that why they provide the other vital services too
