Why does Macs continue to keep these high risk stores open at night? They are putting there employees and the public at risk. If I were downtown and needed something in the middle of the night, I would not feel safe going into this store. The poor guy working there should be getting danger pay.
I guess it will be status quo until someone dies in a robbery.
uh? 10/8/2012 6:52:54 AM Report

You couldn't pay me enough to work there. I agree with you cash cab. What is the point of keeping this store open? And what insurance company would insure this place?? lol
purplepussycat 10/8/2012 8:02:35 AM Report

So in agreement with both posts above. Mind you, I don't see anything changing anytime soon. Let's look at the bigger picture - there is no longer any accountability at any level...Harper lies, gets ratted out - no biggie, we move on to the next scandal. Peter MacKay, Bev Oda, on and on and on no consequences...Pop culture, Chris Brown beats on Rhianna, still making millions, spewing out BS at every opportunity to all the "haters"...no wonder the world is messed...We contradict, accept, turn a blind eye to all of this while we, or some of us "teach" our children to have integrity, accountability, compassion. We want them to respect authority that doesn't punish those who should be punished...sorry for the rant...happy thanksgiving.
Barf breath 10/8/2012 8:32:31 AM Report

I agree with purplepussycat. There is no accountablity in modern society. Charlie Sheen beats the mother of his kids because he high on coke and drunk and gets labeled a "winner". Kids were Charlie Sheen shirts. Go figure...
Wisenheimer 10/8/2012 9:21:48 AM Report

Why is there so much crime in this area of town? Police chief wants $68,000 to explain it to him. I'll "splain" it to him for way less!
Sam C 10/8/2012 9:27:35 AM Report

cashcab... really? I just checked the News archives. There have been 5 robberies reported at local Mac's stores over the past year... only one of them at Gore St.

Yes, the Gore Street store does get hit once in a while, but no more often than the other stores.

As for why these stores remain open, it's because they make far more money than they lose to robberies. Mac's is, after all, a business.
fishin4alivin 10/8/2012 9:46:39 AM Report

The Youth Justice System needs to be revamped!! There are no consequences for the youth and they know it. I feel if they were strictly held responsible for their crimes, we may see a decrease in our crime rate. I'm speaking on a majority of the robberies were done by youth.
hockeyguy 10/8/2012 9:53:42 AM Report

Sam C...really ?...I just checked other news archives and Gore St is leading the charge with robberies this year...At the least this is #3 since January....Jan 4th they were hit, June 11th they were hit and last night they were hit...The original poster was correct that this store is putting it's employees more at risk. Maybe the solution is a a plexi-glass partition between the employee and the customer....pretty crappy but that will not happen until one of those employees gets stabbed....
Zarm27 10/8/2012 9:54:36 AM Report

yar, the convenience of Mac's in certain areas in town outweigh the risks. They have limited funds in the register at night and the employees are advised to comply with the demands for their safety. Kudos to the employee on being able to get some details during the stressful event. Plus where would people get their munchies at 4am if it was closed?
cashcab 10/8/2012 10:58:12 AM Report

zarm27.. they can do what the shell at 2nd line and great northern did, put in a service window. If you need munchies that bad you can tell the guy to get you a bag of doritos and a pack of players light! Lock the doors from midnight to 5:30am and save a life. Sooner or later there will be someone shot or stabbed. Maybe a late night customer like you or someone you love.
dob131 10/8/2012 11:18:26 AM Report

I think Macs Should have Security. It would prob reduce thier insurance, and cause alot less stress for our Police department. Maybe they should be forced to have security if they want to stay open all night.
dob131 10/8/2012 11:21:39 AM Report

Hey dob thats the smartest thing i have ever heard .
sweetc 10/8/2012 11:26:15 AM Report

Stress on our police department..... You have got to be kidding.... unless you are talking about the stress of possibly actually getting to the scene in a timely manner...... Thats just my opinion of course....
girl8 10/8/2012 11:35:52 AM Report

I agree ... A friend of mines house got broken into and thousands of dollars of stuff was stolen .. The doors were locked! It took police over 24hrs to get there to take pictures/fingerprints! That's pathetic! And they just brushed it off as if they didn't even care/ couldn't do anything at all.. It wasn't a pitty little theft it was thousands of dollars in a locked house! No wonder why all these break ins are happening, nobody gets caught!
dob131 10/8/2012 11:42:55 AM Report

If these other crimes like armed robbery were minimized, maybe they would spend more time on these 100's of Break ins reported. If you read other news stories, you would see that these are repeat offenders that are committing these break ins and are usually caught trying to pawn the stuff later. Security is the way to go for these Mac's stores , and they should be forced to have security to operate at such a late time of night.
Bad Dawg 10/8/2012 11:56:39 AM Report

its all in your reputation.... I leave my house unlocked, Jeep unlocked, keys in the boat, camp unlocked. I have never been broken into..... I am young enough to kick their asses and old enpough to pay the legal bills.

All the lil punks know I am the mean guy at the end of the street and don't piss me off......even gotta kid that pushes his mototrbike past my house before starting it. Had another bully type with 8-10 friends showing off by throwing bottles into driveways and I told him to stop and go somewhere else he tried to challenge me saying it wasn't him but when I handed him a broom saying "do it or your getting it".... yeah he swept and his buddies said sorry.
N1T5 101 10/8/2012 1:38:12 PM Report

Man I'd love to be working when one of these junked out hoodrats try and threaten me with a knife I would have to send a MSG to those who try and rob with a petty kitchen knife wouldn't be the first time I was in a situation like that it would make them think twice and another thing instead of having security guards patrol the pavilion why Don't they have them stationed at these "high risk" stores and theses cops need to give there heads a shake an get there priorities straight
Dead End Kid 10/8/2012 3:34:16 PM Report

Store owners that stay open all night should be allowed to have a trained police dog tied up behind the counter. The very presence alone of having a large dog sitting on the floor would be a deterrent in probably 98% of all potential robberies and we all know that most of these "two bit" thieves are cowards. I'm sure that once the decent law abiding people have become used to this idea, they to would feel safer while they drop in during the night.
cdnprincess 10/8/2012 3:41:17 PM Report

I worked at a Short Stop in Kitchener and I worked the night shift. I'm a female and I was never robbed. The front door locked automatically after 11 and I didnt' have to let anyone in. I would only open the door after I knew the security camera caught their face. Or how about putting in a window and the clerk would do transactions thru bullet proof glass... how's about a little safety for the employees?
guestwho 10/8/2012 4:11:57 PM Report

sounds like a snappy dresser, can`t be more than one like that, and still can`t find the guy???
rache 10/8/2012 5:01:39 PM Report

Whoever actually is stupid enough to believe that there is no stress in policing should try going out and checking out this city on their own. Fact, there are no more then 4-5 police cars, double manned on during a weekday night shift. Problem, absolutely, so if you are mad thinking they are taking their time coming to your dog barking complaint, or the fact that your neighbour threw some snow from his driveway to yours, your right, they are. It has gotten to the point where police actually have to prioritize their calls. For instance if their is an assault, or a bad car crash, guess what, your " I think someone is in my back yard" complaint is gonna wait. Not because they dont care, but because they just can not respond. It is a sad state of affairs I know, but the police in this town are UNDERstaffed, OVER worked, and UNDER paid.
seller65 10/8/2012 5:07:38 PM Report

I actually called right now and checked - there were 8 officers in four cars patrolling the city last night and calls were backed up for some time while they responded to priorities - I was told there were several domestics and high risk calls last night. How about hiring cops to patrol the city instead of unarmed security guards to sit in a convenience store?
rache 10/8/2012 7:11:15 PM Report

@seller65, thank you, the problem is not the response times, the problem is so much bigger then the apparent unwillingness to do their jobs. They work harder then anyone can imagine, with societies worst ppl, and in the cities worst places. We should be thanking them, and not putting them down!
speed7 10/8/2012 11:09:27 PM Report

There has been quite a few robberies at that location. Maybe its time to either beef up the policing in that area or have the location move somewhere else, far from the loosers druggies , hookers and plain delinquents that frequent that area.
sinikka 10/9/2012 7:52:52 AM Report

i have read some very uneducated comments here. Blaming everyone but the actual criminals. Perhaps many of you should thank macs for staying open or these punks looking for some quick drug money would be robbing your house , your car, mugging your family members. The real problem is the oxy, the crystal meth, the cocaine. This is not a sault ste.marie problem, this is a societal problem. The police cannot stop it as these people live each day looking for their next fix and they will stop at nothing to get it. Know where your children are at night, know who they are hanging out with and what they are doing. These problems must be first fixed at the grass roots level. Everyone of us must be accountable for trying to fix societies problems in our own homes first. I agree that the young offender's act must be modifed and the jail sentences must be increased. Enough slaps on the wrist. Punishment first, rehabilitation second.
Stevie-E 10/9/2012 1:04:15 PM Report

I would love to own a Mac's. First things first, get the cheap owners out and have two on staff at all times! You know who you all are. Protect your employees!

I know what I would have behind the counter. Ever see Inglourious Basterds?
