Sports rewind: The week that was

Monday, October 08, 2012   by: Brad Coccimiglio

Worried you may have missed that big trade made by the Soo Greyhounds? Or maybe you're wondering how the Soo Thunderbirds or Soo North Stars made out  last week on the ice.

With work and social lives, sometime we just don't have the time to search for the hockey results from last week that we didn't check the next morning.

In a new weekly feature here at Soo Today, all your sports needs have been put together for easy access.

Similar to the weekend rewind feature, we have linked up the past week in sports to allow you to check in on what’s happened around the city sports scene, which we all know is buzzing with activity.

In the last week alone the Soo Greyhounds acquired a new defenceman, named a captain and played three games at the Essar Centre.

The Soo Greyhounds opened the week by adding some more local flavour to their roster.

On Wednesday, the Soo Greyhounds announced their captain prior to a game against the Saginaw Spirit.

The week that was saw the Greyhounds picked up a mid-week win over Saginaw before splitting a pair of games, beating Kitchener on Friday and losing to Sarnia on Saturday.

Sunday saw the Greyhounds announce that another defenceman has been added to the injured list.

In other hockey action, the Soo Thunder returned home from Sudbury and North Bay with wins while the Soo North Stars continued their dominance of the Great North Midget League.

Speaking of the Soo Thunder, coach Sal Lamantea was named as one of the coaches for the NOHA Under-16 program.

Wednesday night saw a winning streak come to an end in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.

In basketball action, Sault College crowned champions in junior and senior girls basketball at the Cougar Classic.

The weekend also saw Algoma University play in three Ontario University Association exhibition games.
