NEWS RELEASE

US CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION

*************************
Information for holiday travelers at Michigan border xrossings

DETROIT - U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Field Operations reminds travelers planning trips across the Detroit, Port Huron and Sault Ste. Marie border crossings to have their approved travel documents and to anticipate heavy traffic during the Columbus Day and Canadian Thanksgiving holidays.

In compliance with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), all travelers, including U.S. and Canadian citizens, need to present an approved travel document to enter the U.S. by land and sea. Air travelers need a passport while those traveling by land or sea may use a variety of documents to include a Passport, Passport card, Trusted Traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST), an Enhanced Driver’s License, Enhanced Identification Card or approved Tribal Documents.

U.S. and Canadian children under the age of 16 can present an original or certified copy of their birth certificate.

Please visit the WHTI website for additional information (www.getyouhome.gov).

Use of WHTI compliant, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) enabled documents helps reduce the time it takes to process travelers at the border.

U.S. lawful permanent residents are reminded that their I-551 form is acceptable for land and sea travel into the U.S.

Frequent cross-border travelers are encouraged to obtain a radio frequency identification (RFID)-enabled travel document such as a U.S. Passport Card, Enhanced Driver’s License/Enhanced Identification Card or Trusted Traveler Program card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST) to expedite their entry and make crossing the border more efficient.

The Ambassador Bridge in Detroit and the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron will have Ready Lanes open to help traffic flow smoothly.

With the holiday, travelers should expect increased traffic at border crossings and are reminded of the following simple steps they can employ when crossing the border.

Tip #1 – Travelers should familiarize themselves with the “Know Before You Go” section of the CBP Web site to avoid fines and penalties associated with the importation of prohibited items.

Tip #2 – Travelers should prepare for the inspection process before arriving at the inspection booth. Travelers should have their crossing documents available for inspection and should be prepared to declare all items acquired abroad.

Tip #3 – Members of the traveling public should consult the CBP Web site to monitor border wait times at ports of entry. Information is updated hourly and is useful in planning trips and identifying periods of light traffic/short waits.

Tip #4 – During periods of heavy travel, border crossers may wish to consider traveling outside of peak times which normally occur between the hours of 9am and 5pm.

Tip #5 – Travelers should plan to build extra time into their trips in the event they cross during periods of exceptionally heavy traffic like holiday weekends.

Tip #6 – Know the difference between goods for personal use vs. commercial use.

Tip #7 –Do not attempt to bring fruits, meats, dairy/poultry products and firewood into the United States from Canada without first checking whether they are permitted.

So this weekend is different as apposed to any other weekend? I think everyone knows by now they need to bring proper travel documentation when crossing into the U.S. If they don't then they probably shouldn't be crossing anyway.

HAHA No kidding!
OMGWTF 10/5/2012 3:38:57 PM Report

We may not have so many empty stores if fewer people go over. I try to avoid it like the plague. And for those of you with trucks guess what! You wouldn't complain about your fill ups so much if you had bought a small car. Too many boy toys and big egos

OMGWTF I wish more ppl. thought like you, then there wouldnt be such long line ups going over to the USA.And you try to avoid it like the plague.Sounds like another dead business promo from dead town QUEEN ST.Gas is just a bonus for going over to the USA,the shopping is the main reason,no EGOS here just plain math on the savings.ZOOM.ZOOM
OMGWTF 10/6/2012 6:51:36 AM Report

A.E.D. - you probably burn as much gas waiting on the bridge as money you would have saved staying in Canada. Take the bridge toll, the exchange rate, the smaller US gallon, cost of the toll and the value of your time ( yes time is valuable) then why bother. At best you probably break even, at worst you loose money every time. Shopping across the ditch sucks. Prices are almost the same so the math doesn't add up. And you wonder why shopping in Soo Canada is not that great. By taking your money out of the country you support the vicious cycle of store closures here and signal possible new retailers that business in SSM is not open so why come here with a new business?
A.E.D. 10/6/2012 8:49:18 AM Report

OMGWTF. Heres the numbers just for you,CANADIAN GAS 5.23gal,USA 4.04 gal. and we just shut off our vehicles if there is a wait, plus add in the 5 gal container i fill up.The same dog food, exact same one third the price, and i can go on and on,so dont let on its not cheaper to shop across the boarder. And i could care less about our canadian businesses in sault ste marie.FREE TRADE REMEMBER.
A.E.D. 10/6/2012 10:43:25 AM Report

OMGWTF. And you say i wonder why shopping in the soo is not that great, where have i ever made that statement, and bye the way, who do you think owns Wally-World,the station mall, and the list goes on and on.And the amount different in our gal. to the US gal is a little over two cups.It sounds like you cant get across the boarder with your made up statements on here.If anything we need a four lane bridge built like thur doing at the Sarnia boarder crossing, and Canada is lending the USA the money for thur share of the bridge.lol
