Trades Day of Caring - Call for entry

Sault College and United Way of Sault Ste. Marie and district are proud to present the 3rd Annual Trades Day of Caring to be held Saturday, November 3, 2012.

This project provides help to seniors in Sault Ste. Marie, ON with minor household repairs and maintenance which will result in reduced utility costs.

Under the guidance of Sault College Instructors, Sault College trades students will be assigned to several different households to perform minor repairs to seniors’ homes.

Small projects will include window caulking, weather stripping, sealing windows for the winter, and similar items.

In addition to these services, Sault College students will also be performing outdoor maintenance such as raking and collecting leaves, ensuring exterior faucets are turned off, and hoses are wrapped and put away for winter.

Last year, 38 Sault College trades students donated a Saturday and attended 21 different homes in Sault Ste. Marie to assist with repairs and ensure the homes as well as the owners were prepared for the coming winter.

Applicants will be assessed and approved for this program based on need.

If you or anyone you know is a senior, a home owner, and is interested in participating, please contact Rob Majury, project coordinator at the United Way 705-256-7476 Ext. 222 or rmajury@ssmunitedway.ca before October 19, 2012 to participate in the project.

What a wonderful and thoughtful idea. Hats off to all the volunteers and Sault College.

Excellent idea. Commend those that came up with the idea as well as those that are participating. However, I am surprised that the idea wasn't scuttled by the need for criminal record checks and other bureaucracy
