NEWS RELEASE

MINISTRY OF
NATURAL RESOURCES

***************************
$2,500 in fines for offences related to illegal sale and harvest of baitfish

Three tourist businesses in the Wawa area pleaded guilty to offences related to the selling and harvesting of baitfish.

Mar Mac Lodge and Camp 88 were fined $800 each for unlawfully taking baitfish and $300 each for selling baitfish without a commercial bait licence.

White River Air was fined $300 for buying baitfish without a commercial bait licence.

Court heard that in July 2011, Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers conducted a commercial baitfish inspection at Mar Mac Lodge.

It revealed that between May and July 2011, the lodge had trapped and sold baitfish without a commercial bait licence.

During the inspection, it was revealed that Camp 88 had also trapped and sold baitfish without a commercial bait licence.

An inspection of an associated business, White River Air, revealed that it had purchased baitfish and sold it to its clients without a commercial bait licence.

Justice of the Peace Pierre Leclerc heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Sault Ste. Marie, on September 11, 2012.

Harvesting and selling of baitfish are activities regulated by the Ministry of Natural Resources and require a licence.

The ministry reminds the public that conservation officers conduct routine checks to ensure that anglers and operators are obeying a variety of laws.

To report a natural resource violation, call 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) toll free any time or contact your local ministry office during regular business hours.

You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

MNR....get a real job.
cutandsplit 10/3/2012 8:34:42 PM Report

That is too much! Surely the time and money spent on these "investigations" could have been better used or perhaps the MNR is trying to justify their jobs with the lay-offs coming. Another example of the government attacking the working man.
Timbob 10/3/2012 9:17:46 PM Report

So White River Air purchased the bait fish (probably from a licenced bait fish dealer) and sold them to customers who were going fishing.

Big freaking deal!

The MNR is a bunch of ASSHOLES! Sorry, but I don't have any kinder words for that useless organization.

I hope McGuinty shuts the entire MNR organization down, and cuts their budget to ZERO.

WOW!!! Front page news.Maybe with some more BIG BUSTS like this we could sustain the MNR on its own - no goverment assistance. Nice waste of taxpayers money. Keep up the hard work. Another Hardened criminal taught a lesson. lol Catch some poachers maybe!!!
undertheradar 10/4/2012 2:23:45 PM Report

So why doesn't MNR tell the rest of the story? This is a real feather in the cap for MNR. I agree shut them down completely. It is a useless organization that does more harm than good. Bye bye la!

Timbob, lol, that's awesome man and they didn't even delete it, capitalized and everything.

the fines are bigger for driving suspended for things like not paying a speeding ticket.
