whats it gonna take for them to put a crosswalk or traffic light there? speed limit is only 40 in the school zone but how many people follow that?
iLash 10/3/2012 5:01:34 PM Report

I agree, it is a bad area to cross and be walking. People speed along there all the time.
geterdun 10/3/2012 5:02:47 PM Report

ever watch cars and trucks go up second line hill or st georges hill or any hill for that matter between 6 and 9 in the morning..............VROOOOOOOOOMM Nascar !!!!!!!!!! so were are the cops??????? you can pick any hill cops its the same thing every single day winter, spring or fall.......This city has the worst drivers in all of Canada..........and thats a fact.....It is their job to police this isnt it or did they contract that out to LMAO!!!!!!!
krystal20 10/3/2012 5:08:29 PM Report

Sad thing is they plan on making that area into one big elementary school at st basils i think more safety needs to be put in place before hand
jean-marie 10/3/2012 5:09:18 PM Report

Christina, your assuming that the pedestrian was struck crossing the street (J-walking to which is illegal), but they weren't.
And there is a crosswalk just up the street in visible sigh, that is pedestrian controlled, What's wrong with that one?? Adding a light right in front of the school will cause nothing but more issues!
Sam C 10/3/2012 5:22:02 PM Report

jean-marie... expecting pedestrians coming from Grand or Reid to walk along the shoulder of the road (there is no sidewalk on the north side) and cross at the McNabb crossing is unrealistic.

A proper crossing at the school will not cause problems -- except, perhaps, for drivers who believe the speed limit, traffic lights, and other controls do not apply to them.
Shaggy 10/3/2012 5:38:10 PM Report

Actually, a crossing at the school will cause problems in the winter when cars have to stop halfway up a slippery hill.
Working Man 10/3/2012 5:41:39 PM Report

It's not illegal to cross the street. You can cross mid-block as long as you yield to traffic. That's not J-walking.

If you hit a pedestrian crossing the street to St. Basils, you shouldn't be driving.

But I heard the driver of the car played hockey... So who knows what really happened! Who really is the 'victim' here? Don't be so hard on this guy..... Anybody can just run in front of a car....

Anyway, Yes, there should be a cross-walk there, obviously!! But, then again, how many vehicles obey the cross-walk at the grocery store - you know the diagonal yellow lines in front of the store, the ones you're supposed to yield for pedestrians walking with their carts?
Christina216 10/3/2012 5:57:15 PM Report

jean-marie..are you a mind reader just by what people post? wow your awesome...ITS A SCHOOL.. there should have been one in place when it became a school. if people have problems stopping on a hill in winter then thats the citys fault...salt or sand the hill better. what are you gonna do when they put a light in the middle of second line hill when the new st. marys opens?

Hatch 10/3/2012 6:32:55 PM Report

Thank you Shaggy. At least someone shows some show common sense.

As for the comment of it being unrealistic walking to the crosswalk...take your chances and don't complain if you get hit.
JustMe1234567 10/3/2012 8:19:41 PM Report

It's really congested there, buses, cars, students, hill.
Bad place for a school really.
B Boy 10/3/2012 8:21:30 PM Report

Maybe the police will put up one of their speed radar signs. That'll take care of everything!

How often does anyone actually see a proactive speed reduction program in place? (That typically doesn't include a radar sign or speed bumps).

A regular police presence in areas of concern has historically been the most effective.

It's amazing how everyone knows about how dangerous areas are and have for years yet nothing seems to be done!
Boomer4771 10/3/2012 8:32:39 PM Report

In the morning when you drive east the sun is rising and blinds the hell out of you, even when wearing sunglasses. Think about this while coming over a hill. Just a thought, not an excuse for not being careful.Same happens in the evening going west.
mrmarc 10/3/2012 10:40:05 PM Report

You people are making comments without knowledge.. Cruisers at the top of the hill, not obeying the speed limit..

Last time I checked, the story didnt say anything about speeding, or that the driver was driving erratically.

You know that they say when you assume..
Lyle 10/4/2012 7:17:03 AM Report

Just wanted to say when I went by the school at that time the truck was behind the police car and in the picture you can see that the truck is in the parking lot and not on the road.
But I also agree that alot of people do speed in that area.
SipKing 10/4/2012 12:22:06 PM Report

AND now in all their wisdom the HSCDSB is going to turn this into an Elementary school, approx 600 students between the ages of 4 and 14 years old. What is this boards thinking.I know many families that have young children that will be attending this school, all within a 5 to 10 minute walk to the school, Yes they could catch a bus at 7:30 am or they can just leave the house at 8:15 am and walk to school, my guess is the 12 and older children will walk. Has this school board considered how they will monitor children leaving during the school day. This is a BAD location for a high school and worse yet for an Elementary school.
VLC 10/4/2012 2:14:01 PM Report

SipKing.....You said it perfectly. I am fortunate that my youngest will be in Grade 9 by the time they plan to "transform" it into an elementary school. I currently drop off one child at Basil's every morning and it gets pretty hairy.
