HSCDSB response to collision
The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board is responding to an incident which occurred this morning on Highway 17 west of Blind River involving a school bus carrying students from Our Lady of Lourdes French Immersion Catholic School in Elliot Lake.
Five children in the Grade 4/5 class and the Grade 4/5 teacher suffered minor injuries when the bus they were travelling in was struck from behind by a tractor trailer.
All six have received treatment at the Blind River District Health Centre.
The students and staff were en route to the Mississuagi First Nation to participate in a presentation on drug awareness.
A total of 55 students and their teacher chaperones were on two buses travelling to the event.
After the incident, the students who were not injured on the bus that was struck and those on the second bus, were transported to the Blind River Community Complex and subsequently to St. Mary’s Catholic School in Blind River.
Trauma counselors from Algoma Family Services are on site.
All parents/guardians of the students on both buses have been advised of the situation and actions being taken by the Board.
Parents/guardians of the injured students are en route to the Blind River Health Centre as is the spouse of the injured teacher.
Arrangements are being made for transport of students and staff back to Our Lady of Lourdes.
A Board superintendent is at St. Mary’s Catholic School at this time and the director of education and Board counselors are en route to Blind River.
