B Boy 10/2/2012 3:27:14 PM ReportBefore I moved to SSM I drove through the city countless going back & forth to school. I stumbled across the travel centre by accident and my first thought was "what a dumb location".
Wouldn't it make more sense to put in a location as you enter the city so you'll see what there is to do and why you should stay longer?
Nothing makes people want to leave the Soo like a trip downtown!
That's my outsider perspective.
liam 10/2/2012 6:28:43 PM Report"put in a location as you enter the city"?
You mean like near the big steel thing called an International Bridge where most of our tourism comes from?
Boomboom 10/2/2012 7:40:01 PM ReportYes, exactly, it's travel information for tourists...and where do most of our tourists come from? The bridge! I used to work there, a long time ago, and some people would even come in looking for Michigan info before they headed over the bridge, however they have their own info centre in MI once you pass the toll booths. It's Ontario Travel. Travel information for people visiting Ontario, they have info on Ontario cities, and of course SSM too. It's not strictly a SSM info centre. Simple as that!
B Boy 10/2/2012 8:14:56 PM ReportI wish I could find the SSM tourism I read that was published sometime in the late '90s. I believe it indicated that 65% of the tourism was through the trans Canada highway.
B Boy 10/2/2012 8:19:51 PM ReportThat centre is also only effective if you happen to look right or turn right after crossing the bridge into Canada. As a tourist I had no idea is was there until I moved here and was looking for it for currency exchange. If it was in one of those blank voids that's used to hold mangled shopping carts and trash that was dumped there in the winter snow then it would be easier to find. Most of the tourists I see in town are just passing through.
geterdun 10/2/2012 9:15:34 PM Reporthow much for a t shirt ?????? it wouldve be nice if you had put the costs on here .......just sayin??????
sinikka 10/3/2012 8:10:19 AM ReportBBoy get out of the 90's. The majority of our tourism comes from the bridge, simple. Once the foreign resident tax was modified there was an explosion to our cottage/ recreational properties around the sault ste.marie, and with that it was inevitable that tourism came with it as many of the friends and family members of those american recreational property owners visited the sault.
