Meet the newest member of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service’s Canine Unit

We are very pleased to announce the newest addition to our Canine Team: Justice, a full-bred German shepherd, born on March 20, 2011.

Justice and Constable Daniel Turco are currently attending the Canine Training Program at the OPP Academy Canine Training Centre in Gravenhurst. 

The course is scheduled to be completed on December 14, 2012.

Constable Turco is a 17-year veteran of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. 

During his career to-date, he has worked in Patrol Services, the Containment Team, in the High School Liaison Officer Program, and the Emergency Services Unit.

Constable Turco was selected as the Service’s canine handler and assigned to the Canine Unit on September 1, 2012.

In June 2012, the Police Service held a “Name the K-9” contest within the elementary schools and an overwhelming reaction was received with a total of 539 responses. 

While there were many excellent names considered by an internal selection committee, a definite deciding factor in the naming is the acknowledgement of the many years of service to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Board by the Honourable James D. Greco, retired Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice. 

Justice Greco was appointed to the Police Services Board on January 1, 2004 as a community representative by City Council. 

He has served as the Chair since February 1, 2007.

Ten entries were submitted for Justice from the following elementary schools: Rosedale, Holy Family, St. Pius X, Our Lady of Lourdes, R.M. Moore, Anna McCrea, Greenwood. 

As three entries came from the Holy Family elementary school, they will receive the first visit by Constable Turco and Justice. 

Constable Turco and Justice will then visit the rest of the winning schools and all the classes who named him will receive a pizza party.

Chief Davies stated: “I am very pleased with the selection of Justice and I look forward to the results that he and Constable Turco will receive. Canine Units add so much to a Police Service’s ability to not only combat crime but also engage in search and rescue operations within a community. Thank you to all the students who participated in this contest. We are very thrilled with the results and the involvement we saw by so many of the youth in our community.”
