Tenaris Algoma Tubes: Bonus or no bonus?

Thursday, September 27, 2012   by: SooToday.com Staff

SooToday.com has received a number of complaints from employees of Tenaris Algoma Tubes stating that they would not be receiving their expected annual bonus this year.

One reader wrote to us to say that her husband was informed just a week prior to the scheduled bonus pay day that he would not be receiving the estimated $2,000 of extra income.

"Our family, as well as many others who have spouses who work for Tenaris, have already spent this money or had a plan for where it was going to be spent knowing that we are getting the money - and have gotten it every other year," she stated. "And we know its not a money thing... management is still getting their allotted 6 percent bonus."

We spoke with Tenaris Algoma Tubes communications representative Chris Belsito who was aware of the information sent to us and said the letter is incorrect, although he could not elaborate.

"There is a bonus system in place for employees," Belsito told us. "Bonuses are never a guarantee, but are simply an add-on."

Belsito could not comment regarding specific bonus amounts, stating he's unable to disclose details of the employee compensation agreement.

Bunch of Clark Griswolds!

If you are depeendent on $2k additional, then your priorities aren't in the right place. I am sure everyone there is paid very well.

You work in that industry, the global market tells whether or not you will be getting a bonus

Sorry guys - not this year!

opinionated 9/27/2012 1:37:03 PM Report

There are a couple big reasons for the stir this has caused. For one, management/office is still getting their bonus. Also, they have set production records all year. The company made more money this year than last (those numbers are public, go check it out). It blows my mind to wonder why they would screw around with production employees like this, not to mention their contract is up very soon.

Thing is, they took it away with no reasoning behind it, not even any reasons anyone can speculate!

GEMACO 9/27/2012 1:43:27 PM Report

does anyone realize that this has been going on in the OPS for the last 4-5 years??? the big wig execs get there 6-10% and sometimes even 20% bonuses and raises, and the employees who actually do the work, get nothing... not even cost of living increase....

Stop the crying... don't spend money you don't have...

To GAMECO public sector wages are so freaking ridiculous you guy's don't have to worry about 2K bonus at the end of the year. Maybe in two years after the freeze their wages might be in check with " REALITY "
ShawnM 9/27/2012 2:10:10 PM Report

Thats the one problem with unions, they just expect that they will get everything... Bonus's are that a bonus, your employer does not have to give them to you, they choose to give them to you. Be grateful and stop spending outside your means.
Truck 9/27/2012 2:11:44 PM Report

Wages have been frozen in the Public sector for 3 years now....plus today they announce an additional 2 year freeze. The response..."its about time Government Employees dd their fair share".Which for an outsider seems a legitimate thing to say. By the end of this freeze my wages will have ben frozen for close to 6 years. Yet over that time....gas, food, taxes, goods and services have all increased in price. My property taxes...4.4% alone for each year for the next 3 years! Now everyone is starting to get a taste of what it feels like....and is up is arms.
PunkBob 9/27/2012 2:12:04 PM Report

Yes it sucks, I have not heard this story yet, however the way stories get tossed around at the mill I won't believe what I hear until I hear it from a trusted source. Regarding the bonus, we do get production bonuses every couple months, this year they have been pretty substantial due to the production we have achieved.

The bonus in question is considered "Extra ordinary" which to be honest I never expect. Tenaris is a company, I am surprised that we get anything extra from them. If they no longer wish to give us a bonus then they don't have to. It doesn't surprise me, they dont even want to spend money on replacing outdated dangerous equipment. They would rather patch it with duct tape and run it until it dies.

I may be young but I learned a long time ago, never spend money before you have it.....nothing is guaranteed.
JediMindTrick 9/27/2012 2:13:18 PM Report

hahaha
I like how it's not even the employee complaining; it's his wife who also implies that its the spouses who depend on the bonus, not the employee.
Learn to live within your means, quit spending money you don't have and stop complaining. You need an extra $2000, get a loan and move on.
Whatever the circumstance is with management, a 'bonus' is by no means an entitlement and it does not purely depend on profits. There are many factors that go in to determining WHAT AND IF a bonus is possible (not simply profits for a fiscal quarater or year).

By the way SooToday, I played Lotto649 last week and didn't win.... but thought I should have and I have already spent $2,000,000. I would like to file a formal complaint against the OLG,
Thank you.

DowntownJuniorBrown 9/27/2012 3:43:15 PM Report

The no bonus situation is unfortunate but as Mr.Belsito states there are no guarantees when given out bonuses.

However that's fairly easy to state when you are one of the fortunate people who works in the front office and gets their bonus for the year.

As far as the "bonus plan" that's in place, that is something that's earned by the workers for performing well and getting product out the door.

If the company didn't want to give out a bonus they should have told their workers, not have them find out second hand after the fact, a simple email probably would have been sufficient enough. There's no way the company just realized they weren't going to be giving out the bonuses.

This is not news and should be something dealt with internally, there isn't a person outside of that mill that's going to care that you didn't get your bonus.

If you were foolish enough to spend money you didn't have that's your problem; that bonus could have only been $100.

Bottom line crying to sootoday isn't the way to go about this, also not giving your employees the simple gesture of knowing they weren't getting a bonus is cowardly.

The "complaints" to the media are not representative of the entire Algoma Tubes workers. Most of us don't give a damn as this "extraordinary bonus" as Tenaris has called it, was never guaranteed and was an unexpected compensation for a few years. First of all... quit comparing public sector jobs to mill work. How many times has your life been in jeopardy. The mailman fighting a bichon frise...the secretary fighting a paper cut. We work around dangerous gases, furnaces and at any moment a load of steel can fall crushing anybody underneath. I work at Essar Steel and still feel for these workers. All you "highly intelligent" (cough cough) people like Gemaco talking about wage freezes for 3 years. If you dont like it come work for Essar or Tenaris and see how long you last Nancy. Before you say something stupid like go back to school....a lot of us already did and when we applied for your jobs...they told us we were too intelligent to do your menial paper pushing jobs. This article had nothing to do with public sector jobs but all you people with an opinion had to respond. If you dont like your wage freezes then find a new job. You wont because you know how "gravy" you actually have it. Go put on your cardigan and pretend to work. Most of "you" people are probably writing this on public sector time as well. If I was in government I wouldn't freeze your wages...I would lower your wages. Grow up and stay out of other peoples business.

The normal or average person works 40hours a week. Now about the people who say a bonus is always going to be available. I agree! But hold on. What's fair is fair. Let me put it this way for u dummies that don't think straight before u shoot your beek off. Let's say we get to the Stanley cup in the big show and win it all, does everyone get to hold the Cup? First off, I know a bonus shouldn't be expected (& those of you that spent it ahead of time - think a little) but after receiving it for many years in a row you hope it's going to be there, a nice little added bonus for Christmas coming up. Yes our production bonus has been a little higher this year but why not reward your employees for a job well done instead of causing a division in the workplace. No! The managers don't get a production bonus, but they do get a performance bonus that we don't get! We, on the floor make the managers look good, not the other way around. The company handled it completely wrong & caused a big rivalry between workers & managers. They only gave us three days notice that we were not getting this bonus but the managers received their bonus last week. This turns into a respect issue. How did they think we would respond, this is nothing but a slap in the face. From a company point of view keep the people happy & they failed at that. A can of worms has just been opened!!

You sleep your first one. The second day you just start to snap out of Zombie mode. Happy to get 4 hours OT....that's funny! I myself and I bet a lot of people would rather have a 2 days an 2 nights schedule that gives you a 72 hour pay, 84 hour pay and and beautiful 96 hour pay! Well that's brutal I guess eh? The wages at Tenaris are decent wages, so if you have to rely on a bonus cheque to get through, then you may need to re-evaluate your finances, which may or may not be possible for various reasons. That being said, I can understand that if they've been handing out bonus cheques for years, then it would hurt, when not getting one, especially if management is still getting their's, as that is totally wrong, because it's the men and women on the floor, who work extremely hard to get the product out, but that's just my opinion. Whether you work in industry or any other profession, we ALL deserve a bonus if feasible, instead of a bone us, which is probably more the norm, in most cases.

babootzoo 9/28/2012 6:58:42 AM Report

LOL! Man oh man! I understand that the bonus cheque isn't a guarantee. Where in my comments does it say that I want a bonus cheque!!! What are you reading! All I'm saying is u can't give money to half the employees and nothing to the other half. No ones complaining about our wages either dumb ass's! And we won't put that in our pipe and smoke it cause our pipe is hot and heavy and we aren't stupid like you dummie's that chew on your led pencils everyday. Just forget it and move on to other arguments that you can try to understand. All we are saying is! Here we go children of the Dumb ass world!!! Are you ready? I will try to say it in another way and you can sit down with your kids and ask them this and I bet that they would understand right from wrong. You go into a room and there's a birthday party for little Johnny! Are you following so far, good. The cake is brought in and we ALL sing HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Have I lost you dumb ass's yet? Johnny's mother now splits the room in half and gives cake to only one side of the room!!! What the hell do think is going to happen to the rest of the kids moral. So like I said, go ask a ten year old if he understands and agree's to that situation! Now I would like to talk a little more but I gotta go to work 7-7, maybe we can all meet at your favorite spot for a coffee at Tim hortons so we can discuss this matter in person so that when you talk stupid we can give you a slap upside your melon what your parents probably should of done along time ago!
babootzoo 9/28/2012 7:03:56 AM Report

That was a misprint in my first story where I said that part where I agree that I think that we were guarenteed the bonus, but I didn't think that you dummies would of caught that! A mistake. We all make them specially when your tired!...:)
speed7 9/28/2012 7:39:33 AM Report

And some of you going on and on about teachers
Hmmm!? Well common sennse ? Do your part?
I'm sure Harper really appreciates that well rounded bonus of yours. Maybe He plans on buying another streath fighter plane with all those bonuses . And all the steel will come from Asia!

The wage freezes In the Ops started 5 years ago! You've been cushy and spoiled with wage increases bonuses and paid overtime in this timeframe.

I don't think it's the public sector feeling a sense of entitlement at all! more like the opposite. Gameco is right! Your all Just acting like wounded birds with a few ruffled tail feathers. need I mention the wages between the ops workers and tenaris? A laborer starting at over $30 an hour? Some of you need to wake up and smell the recession ! Those overtime shifts catching a snooze are long gone!

sinikka 9/28/2012 8:26:55 AM Report

babootzo how soon everyone forgets that the tubular division was almost dead. Algoma steel could not make a go of it and decided to sell it. Tenaris bought it and gave this city about 600 plus good paying jobs. Now i here complaining that half the employees get a bonus and half do not. If you were the one of those getting it you would keep your mouth shut and eat your lil piece of cake. Nobody is entitled to a bonus . Look at your paystub where it says regular wages and be happy you are getting it. If you are not then get another job period.
melvin_smiley 9/28/2012 8:29:23 AM Report

A labourer at tenaris makes $18.75 to start. Thats $10 less than what they used to get 10 years ago when tenaris was owned by algoma. Everyone complaining on here don't know what your talking about cause your fat but forgot cause your stupid. Any personal msg's can be sent to me directly at yousuck@life.com

Well said baboo. The responses still have no idea what you are talking about. I explained the birthday party and stanley cup analogy to my 3 year old and he got it. I guess he wont be cut out for the public sector either. Way too smart.
rolexxx 9/28/2012 8:58:05 AM Report

Hey "I'm In"...You might want to try spell check. It works for my 3 year old as well. If you read my comments, I dont even work there. As for the dumb as nails comment...I am even dumber than nails, but I am smart enough to put those nails somewhere where they will cause you excruciating pain.

P.S. Look how cute. All the Public Sector employees being keyboard tough guys. All together now... awwwwwwwww.
Now let's all put on our sweater vests and tell everyone how busy our jobs are.
GEMACO 9/28/2012 10:15:44 AM Report

JUST FYI... i have never complained about my job or compared who works harder.. or anything like that, but when someone complains that they spent money that they never had, it made me think that you should understand that we have been feeling the same squeeze for the last 3 years...and now have at least 2 more years. Think twice before hammering OPS guys about wages and salaries... I understand the work you do, and respect it! you should be compensated for what you do and I the same. But it is pretty dumb to go out and spend $$ you don't have and then complain about it... that's all the point i was trying to make. sorry if i hurt your feelings... now go rub the soot off your face, you have another 12 hour shift to finish.
BrianS 9/28/2012 10:25:10 AM Report

Alot of people getting off topic here!

If you are making a good wage like these employees do and have already spent this bonus then I think you have some bigger issues, like learning how to budget and live within your means! You can't count on a bonus! Lets face it, most companies will screw you out of a bonus any chance they can so why put yourself in the position of depending on it. As for the argument that mgmt got it but the rank and file did not, again, are you surprised? That's life, mgmt gets their perks and the little guy gets screwed. And besides, without more information it's pretty hard to compare. Is the benchmarks to get the bonus the same for mgmt and the employees or is it totally different? Hard to say with the info posted here regardless of any postings that try to simplify the issue with silly little birthday cake comparisons. Sorry, life isn't that easy, time to grow up buddy and face the fact mgmt and workers get treated differently all over whether most think its fair or not!

And as for all the back and forth comparing OPS work with labour jobs. Seriously? Two different jobs that really unless you have worked both you can't compare and just sound silly. OPS has had cutbacks and wage freezes at the lower levels for years now and the general response on sites like this is "too bad, your overpaid" so of course the response from OPS workers on this story is going to be "right back at ya"!!

Regardless it sucks that there was not more warning if this is the first time there will be no bonus. A hard lesson learned to those families that are counting on this as part of their regular income.

OMG some people need to give their heads a shake. If you don't work or have family members working at Tenaris you shouldn't be running off at the mouth.
I actually do know both sides of this situation as I personally work in the OPS and YES they are the cushiest jobs EVER and your lying to yourself if you think otherwise and I have a family member working in Tenaris. A week in these fellow work boots would give most of you heart attacks. And because they work in a mill, attacks on their intelligence is astounding, there are many extremely intelligent tradesmen working in the mill, for about $23-$25 hour not the $35+ jobs a lot of OPS have.
Here's a perfect example OPS is currently hiring a customer service clerk, requiments: grade 12 and don't even need to know how to type wage rate hold on to your hats $24.74 -$27.85 for 36.25 hrs weekly heres link to confirm. http://www.jobbank.gc.ca/detail-eng.aspx?OrderNum=6666715&Source=JobPosting&CmmGrp=GON019&Sources=JobBank,&OpPage=50&Stdnt=No&PgNum=

Most of us have NO idea what it's like to work a 12 hour shift, and think nothing of it. If you know someone who does you'll see the toll it takes on them. If you have a cushy job love it, appreciate it and thank the government for the wonderful set up you have. Stop trying to get public sympathy and for F&^* sake don't attack hardworking people and sound in where you shouldn't be.

The bottom line is the company has set the precident of paying bonuses and set an expectation of it this year and paid half the staff, with actually NO notice or explanation to most of the production or maintenance staff until they read about it in SooToday like the rest of the Sault.

Oh by the way the OPS how many sick days do you get a year, teachers 20 for a ten month period, which can be banked and cashed out when retire, which can work out to almost two years of salary when cashed out. I say good for them, however how many sick days do the hardworking staff at Tenaris get. NONE,if your sick you don't get paid simple.
I love OPS, best dam jobs going, some co-workers get to run home and have 1- 1/2 hr naps for their lunch breaks before their missed. (Sound like you TRUCK??) Before you cry me a river about your 5 weeks vacation, full benefits and ridiculous wages - oh wait they've been frozen, they are still the best paying cushiest jobs in the Sault, go work a week in these fellows shoes before you say stop whining, be thankful etc...

This is a valid complaint Tenaris employees have. Tenaris has on the sweat of Tenaris maintenance and production staff beat all produciton records this year, but instead of rewarding staff as they have in past. They gave them a slap in the face and failed to actually give reason or notice regarding such. That's what this is all about. I'm sure the guys working today in the mill are feeling like beating production records today.

SPEED you need to actually be aware of the facts, you just sound like an ass. Come on, cushy wages in Tenaris, bonuses and raises. GO WORK A WEEK THERE!! And OPS are hard done by, oh come on even you can't believe that.

babootzoo well explained except I really think some still don't understand, yes my seven year old clearly gets the concept:)

GEMACO 9/28/2012 3:17:58 PM Report

well put turbochrg72 - your missing the point though.... the comments were based on the argument that the person has spent the bonus money already. There was no intent to bash mill workers, OPS, BPS or any job, i think both jobs have different requirements and both are hardworking in there own ways...

Now you and others have opened the floor to try and make a point that mill workers are harder workers than the OPS, BPS and even Firefighters etc... work is work... you couldn't do my job and i couldn't do yours without the proper training, and in some cases conditioning:)... lifes a bitch sometimes... you don't like your job? workopolis is a good start...

babootzoo 9/28/2012 6:09:29 PM Report

Gemaco the problem is that there are 600 people that work on the floor. Just cause one person wrote a letter saying they already spent that money doesn't mean the other 599 did or r whinning about it as most of you are stating. The mill is running full force and my life continue's and so does the rest of my bro's! But we won't forget about them big wheels splitting the TEAM up! That was a big mistake on their part and I really hope they get their shit together cause I got a funny feeling this might affect a lot of things come contract time next June! Hard to forget when you feed half the kids their share of the pie and they pretty much treated us hardworking employees that gave them those big profits like pheasants! Cheers to the folks that understand that one person doesn't represent the bunch!
A.E.D. 9/29/2012 9:04:13 AM Report

THIS IS A UNION PROBLEM: The workers need to throw out thur union and get one with a back bone.Thur bonuses should have went in thur contract in writing, lead hands cant work for the company and the union they should make a choice, instead of being RATS for the company to get a title and more pay.Stand your ground workers as you are the ones making records for thur products, stick together work to rule, and show the company who makes the products that they reap the benefits from. When your contract is do tell the union your problems, get new union reps that are not pro-company,and threaten the union that you will be voting on throwing them out and getting a new union. If possible join together with the Essar union, as power is in numbers. So the bottom line is you have a union that doesnt work, but you pay union dues too.TIME TO THROW OUT THAT UNION AND GET A REAL UNION.
speed7 9/30/2012 4:47:01 PM Report

turbochrg72 the cushy jobs are in the plant. You coming in and admitting you work for the OPS and working where? I worked a public sector job at one time years ago and that is so for stretched from the truth. I dont know what work you did. But I busted my chops sometimes with no break no lunches. We busted our backs basically and then the government comes in after an election and chops all the hard working ones with little to nothing on the pay scale. At the bottom of the heap. Toss you out like a dirty sock, sorry no job for you tommorrow. You yourself know how in the OPS the government rules the roost! Did you take a look at the list of beurocrats and those thick salries above? Those are the cushy jobs. I knew of many steel workers making almost that much such as a foreman at the plant and they had numerous overtime shifts added to there normal work week. Hours that they spend sleeping the shift off on the job mostly.

Ask a teacher what salary they start at? I have a family member working at tenaris as a laborer starting wage 30 bucks an hour! Ops employee ? About 19, A teacher around the same? Now after 5 tears he makes almost triple in wages at tenaris? Any one in the ops and a teacher has had wage freezes for the last 3 to 5 years. Not even enough to catch up with inflation????
You can talk about sick days and blow your brains out talking about it but fact is, you haven't felt any these kind of recessional cuts, most of you have no clue what it's like living with bare minimum salaries because your heads are too far shoved up your butt .I've heard so many comments from steelworkers voicing their jealousy towards government workers and teachers. It's disgusting. Do you realize some of you make what our CEO at city hall makes? And still you complain about teacher and ops salaries? Boy! some of you sure can shovel the S&$/T! Pretty good! You all make great wages . Why not just enjoy it? Stop being miserable, sheeeesh!
