A recipe for more disasters on our Great Lakes?

Great Lakes safety will be jeopardized by the closure of the Thunder Bay Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) Centre in Thunder Bay, says Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes.

Great Lakes safety will be jeopardized by the closure of the Thunder Bay Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) Centre in Thunder Bay, says Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes.

The closure means that monitoring of Great Lakes traffic from Lake Superior to the middle of Lake Erie will be done in Sarnia, 1,200 kilometers from Thunder Bay.

During the summer thousands of boats ply these waters every day, Hughes notes in a news release.

She accuses the Harper government of being focused on slashing budgets when it should be remembering Great Lakes shipping history.

“How can they forget tragedies like the Edmund Fitzgerald? This is a recipe for more disasters on our Great Lakes. Why are Conservatives making reckless cuts to essential services in Northern Ontario. Why are they weakening marine safety?”
