A recipe for more disasters on our Great Lakes?

Wednesday, September 26, 2012   by: SooToday.com Staff

Great Lakes safety will be jeopardized by the closure of the Thunder Bay Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) Centre in Thunder Bay, says Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes.

The closure means that monitoring of Great Lakes traffic from Lake Superior to the middle of Lake Erie will be done in Sarnia, 1,200 kilometers from Thunder Bay.

During the summer thousands of boats ply these waters every day, Hughes notes in a news release.

She accuses the Harper government of being focused on slashing budgets when it should be remembering Great Lakes shipping history.

“How can they forget tragedies like the Edmund Fitzgerald? This is a recipe for more disasters on our Great Lakes. Why are Conservatives making reckless cuts to essential services in Northern Ontario. Why are they weakening marine safety?”

Instead of all this posturing in the media why don't you try to do something about it in parliament?

As long as service is comparable how can it endanger anyone? The Fitzgerald sank due to weather not a faulty bloody radio. Histrionic's aside down sizing and maintaining the coverage is a good thing.

Why is Harper doing this? Because he needs to shift money from programs like this to fund the war efforts and more military presence. Pretty sad isn't it? Wars that no one wants. Get ready we will be in Iran by mid 2013. We do what the Americans want us to do. Its time to wake up..

What the heck is Harper thinking? Geez, sounds so much like the MNR running things in Southern Ontario meanwhile eveyrthing is in Northern Ontario. The North seems to be a burden to our federal and provincial government which I think is a load of crap. We have the same rights as everyone else in Canada. How about we cut money from Harper's wallet?

With all the new technology why have an outdated facility wasting tax dollars.

MP Carol Hughes is just another Big Mouth Dipper looking for a cause to champion.

Harper has to go...what has he done to this great country....put us in huge debt with his military crap and now he is really screwing up.

While I regret that one centre will be closed, it ought to be noted that these Marine Traffic Controllers aren't looking out the window trying to spot ships traversing L Superior.

The monitoring is done quite efficiently by satellite radar, and having one centre monitor the entire Great Lakes basin is no longer an onerous task.

Hughes is making a mountain out of a molehill.

Hence the surprise visit from "Captain America."?

For some peoples information, Thunder Bay Coast guard monitors the VHF radio, which pleasure craft boaters use to navigate and communicate on the Great Lakes not only ships. For people to think they need to look out their window to help is crazy. Put yourself on any of the Great Lakes and be in danger of capsizing and call for help on the radio to Sarnia and let them know your going down at the mouth of some small river or around some island and see how familiar they are with our area.NO THANKS! I myself travel the lake frequently and feel good about someone in the north looking out for me.

Harper and his goons alone are the recipe for a disaster period. Oh wait!
Common sense ? NOT!!!!!!

judoka 9/29/2012 9:10:04 PM Report

Just another example of the government doing cuts to save money, or transformation , or what ever they want to call it, and waste the money elsewhere. Have we not had enough with the liberals and conservatives? Now the bullshit with the parks closing, and ontario northland doing its last run. Just more slicing and dicing here. Thanks to government for looking after the people. Promises by these people mean nothing.........
