Ian Laws 9/25/2012 7:32:31 AM ReportWhat is RYTAC? Who is SSMRA? For those of us new to the Soo and even those who have been here for years, tell us what the acronyms in your news story mean.
TTYL
RLE 9/25/2012 7:53:00 AM ReportIan Laws
Not being a Sault insider I suggest the following translation of the acronyms:
RYTAC = Real Yuppie Tantrum Action Committee
SSMRA = Sault Ste. Marie's Really Affluent
As to the question, "Want to save RYTAC?" I think my answer is obvious--NO
inferno 9/25/2012 8:52:59 AM ReportRYTAC is a great tool used by the public to allow their kids the opportunity to take part in tennis, sailing, canoeing, swimming and various other activities. If it wasn't for RYTAC, many kids would not be able to take part in these activities due to the cost associated with owning a boat and accessing waterfront property right in the city. It is unfortunate that another activity has closed for the children of the Soo.
Grace 9/25/2012 8:59:37 AM ReportIan the SSMRA is in the article but I have no idea what RYTAC stands for..
Anyone know?
Maxx22 9/25/2012 9:07:17 AM ReportRYTAC is Rotary YMCA Tennis and Aquatic Club

frauleinbroomhilda 9/25/2012 10:12:21 AM ReportI remember back in the 80's and 90's RYTAC was booming. Maybe if it was advertised more in the elementary, highschools, colleges and universities. Businesses that sell sports equipment. Fast food places where our kids are eating and getting bigger instead of getting active? It was a fabulous way for kids to socialize, learn some fun new things and get involved in. Get the fliers and programs out, market better, commercials on t.v. and radio and get this program running again. It's a good healthy way for our children as well as young adults to stay fit and healthy.
JDW 9/25/2012 10:51:04 AM ReportRYTAC closing is/was a huge mistake?
Inner city resource for kids to
experience small vessel operation and
tennis/volleyball to boot. All of the
incredible spin offs for a kid cannot
even be listed here. It's a no brainer.
My son really missed going to RYTAC this past summer.
thumbs4208 9/25/2012 11:59:45 AM ReportMy oldest was in RYTAC - sad it's not going to be available for my youngest - it's a great program .
RLE educate yourself before you flap off - this is a real concern to some of us.
RLE 9/25/2012 12:44:10 PM ReportThumbs:
Don't care.
Grace 9/25/2012 1:34:50 PM ReportLOL RLE...you crack me up!
unclebob 9/25/2012 4:42:57 PM ReportAs a former resident of the Soo I remember with great fondness my time at RYTAC. I learned sailing and tennis and sculling. I'm sure kids and families still appreciate the opportunity to experience water sports that are inaccessible to so many other communities. RYTAC may require new investment or upgrading, it is decades since I was there, but what it doesn't need is to close. Once such an asset is gone, it will never be replaced.
Teenie 9/25/2012 5:37:59 PM ReportRLE
It's people like you that make the Soo the way it is! Getting rid of RYTAC would be a huge loss for this city.
RLE 9/25/2012 11:29:33 PM ReportTeenie:
Yup it is people like me that make SSM what it is. A modern city that is willing to let go of that which has outlived its usefulness
I don't lament the fact that we no longer have ferry service between the two Saults either
leetvs 9/26/2012 9:38:25 AM ReportI don't fully understand why either of these groups think that they have a say in the matter. Rotary and the YMCA own the property, and they were gracious enough to offer free and inexpensive programming for youth for decades. Recently, it was not used enough, nor garnered enough interest from the community to remain profitable for operation. It's the lack of interest from the community that caused this, stop trying to find blame in two very generous organizations. Rotary still offers our annual Rotaryfest - which is free, community fun for three days, in addition to funding Easter Seals - physically disabled children, exchange programs for kids, and much more. The YMCA offers programs for children and parents who are struggling financially. I am sick and tired of yuppie tennis club players using 'children's programming' as a front to try and save face from their tantrums. The kids/city/taxpayers/schools/parents/teachers, en-mass, were not interested enough - its a shame, but reality. End of story.
