NEWS RELEASE

ALGOMA UNIVERSITY

***************************
Can you leave your car at home for a day?

SAULT STE. MARIE - Bike Share Algoma challenges you to join people from around the world this Saturday, September 22, and leave your car at home for the day.

Do you think you can do it for just one day?

Instead of taking your car, will you walk, cycle or even use public transit in an effort to reduce our dependence on our beloved cars and therefore on fossil fuels; a major cause of global warming.

As the climate heats up, World Car Free Dayis the perfect time to take the heat off the planet, and put it on city planners and politicians to give priority to cycling, walking and public transport, along with the automobile.

Is it possible to leave your car at home in Sault Ste. Marie?

Do we have a public transportation system that will support it?

Do we have bike lanes so that we can use alternative forms of transportation safely?

Is the Hub Trail adequate or simply a pedal in the right direction?

Bike Share Algoma wants you to take the car free challenge and then tell us about your experience - good and/or bad.

Send your comments to bikesharealgoma@gmail.com or post them on Facebook.

Your suggestions will be part of a report submitted to City Council recommending necessary infrastructure changes that support alternative forms of transportation.

Bike Share Algoma, an initiative of students of the Community, Economic and Social Development (CESD) program at Algoma University, is a small (but quickly growing) group of individuals aiming to set up a local bike sharing co-operative system within the city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

Our goal is to address a growing need for alternative, green transportation through making bicycles readily available to all in Sault Ste. Marie.

For more information visit us online or contact us at bikesharealgoma@gmail.com.

World Car Free Day, celebrated every September 22, first started in Europe in the 1990s and is a growing global movement celebrated in over two thousand towns and cities in over thirty countries.

Car Free Day is not anti-car, but promotes awareness of alternative forms of transportation and the public health benefits of more active lifestyles within reach to us all.

Take the Bike Share Algoma challenge so that World Car Free Day can be a showcase for ways that our City can encourage safe alternative forms of transportation... 365 days a year.

hee hee... some cyclists will have fewer cars to cut off but they will go faster than those stupid E-bikes

They may want to update the website. The current "update" is from 2010.

I would love to start taking my bike to work (up on the hill) from the east end (off boundary), but I just can't see myself becoming that cyclist that causes so much disruption on Trunk Rd. If they had a bike lane on Trunk Rd, I'd be a happy camper!

It would be nice if the city had bike lanes ....

So the self proclaimed "Green Energy Capital of North America" doesn't have any of those small cyclist lanes that can be commonly found across other cities?

Hmmm, doesn't seem too "green" to me. Maybe instead of banning e-bikes, etc. like the rumours says they should look at other solutions. But maybe that's too "Green".

Does this mean the overflowing parking lots at Algoma U will be empty for a day?

I think it would make more sense to (For the time being) Lift the bi-law on riding on the sidewalks. Compare a cyclist to even a Kia Rio. Now compare a cyclist to a pedestrian. Who has a better chance? You should feel free to ride your bike all over this city as long as you follow the rules accordingly. That would make me feel better about the roads with no bike lanes.

Why don't we pick a day each week, leave our vehicles at home and boycot the gas stations in our town. Bet we would see our gas prices come down. Tired of these gas stations ripping us off. Let's start Monday Sept 24th no gas to be bought at Canadian Tire, Tuesday all Mac's, Wednesday all Shell gas stations, Thursday all Huskies and Friday all Petro Canada's. All in favor please tell all your friends family coworkers etc. If we work together we can get these high gas prices down. Remember we are getting ripped off.

Is there any chance of Soo Today adding "Like or Not Like" to click on in the comment sections? I cant be the only one who's requested this can I? Sometimes Im just too lazy or nervous to respond. Scared someone will say something mean! Coward I know.Im girly that way; cant help it. So how about it sooday.com?
Giller 9/21/2012 8:14:29 AM Report

Better yet, everyone buy their gas across the river. I can't remember when I bought gas on the Canadian side. It's funny, everyone hunts around town to save one cent per liter, when a one minute ride across the bridge saves you roughly $1.30 a gallon. If your vehicle holds over 20 gallons....do the math. I cant understand why anyone would buy gas on this side....Better still, do your grocery shopping there as well and pick up a $9 12 pack of beer....Oh and fill up a couple 5 gallon gas cans as well. Canadians are getting ripped off. Just my opinion.
