The Second Annual Amazing Race, an OLG fundraiser for the United Way, took place yesterday at a variety of locations throughout the city.
The all-day event kicked off at 8:45 a.m. and saw 17 teams of two travel to 14 different spots to complete various challenges in order to win clues.
One of those challenges was a grueling military-style obstacle course set up at the Sault Ste. Marie Armory on Pine Street.
Under the 'motivational', and sometimes frightening but often humourous direction of Captain Bradley Miller (pictured), participants completed the course while donning an army helmet and 20-pound vest.
"All our training going throughout the military is motivating, supporting, and teamwork, and that's what we wanted to do here," Captain Miller told SooToday.com regarding his motivational skills.
"Like one participant said, laughter is the best medicine. Although, now is not time to take your medicine," he joked.
Among other things, the challenge involved pulling a 165-pound toboggan, and hoisting 20 25-pound sand bags into the back of a truck.
The helpful army boys keeping an eye over the Amazing Race participants as they ran the course told us they were very impressed with everyones performance, especially "the older ladies."
One unfortunate racer did lose his lunch while competing in the obstacle course, however.
"It's not real training until someone pukes," we were jokingly told.
