NEWS RELEASE
This Saturday, over 375 Red Hat Society members from across Michigan will be converging downtown for a parade, beginning at 1 p.m.
The parade route will begin near the Valley Camp, continue down Water Street, turn south on Ashmun Street, and then west onto Portage Avenue, finishing at the ice cream shop on West Portage across from the Soo Locks.
The public is encouraged to watch the parade featuring hundreds of red hat-wearing women and wonderfully decorated automobiles.
Following the parade, participants will enjoy an ice cream social on West Portage near the gift shops.
Many businesses throughout downtown are expecting an influx of shoppers, and have offered special in-store discounts throughout the day to Red Hat Society members.
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens.
But maybe I ought to practise a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.
