Downtown on the farm with Mayor Deb (15 photos)

Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Debbie Amaroso loves her veggies!
The Mayor cut the ribbon and blew the candles on a birthday cake at the Algoma’s Farmers Market Wednesday afternoon, as part of Sault Ste. Marie’s ongoing Celebrate 100! Ceremonies, adjacent to the Roberta Pavilion.
Mayor Amaroso told Soo Today “I appreciate everything they do, I came out here in celebration of them.”
“This is a great venue.”
“What’s better than fresh fruit and vegetables, there’s nothing better than that.”
Mayor Amaroso said, in praise of those who grow and sell their own produce in our area, “it’s a hard, hard life, and my hat is off to everyone who does this, we have to support them, and give them opportunity to expand.”
The Algoma Farmers' Market shows off its healthy produce just north of the Bondar Pavilion Saturday 8am-12pm and Wednesday 2pm-6pm
Amaroso told Soo Today the concept of a permanent farmers market for Sault Ste. Marie is still definitely on the radar.
“The concept is incorporated into the Gateway Site, but it is sitting on the back burner right now, because we have new players on the table right now, with the OLG modernization, with the new owners of St. Mary’s Paper, we want to see their vision…do they want to partner with us on that property?”
“Once we have had discussions on that opportunity, this will certainly be a great venue for Sault Ste. Marie.”
And, by the way, Mayor Amaroso said “eat your veggies, they’ll make you strong!”
“I love squash, zucchini and snow peas.”
Vendor Shawn Spurway from the Thessalon area, one of the vendors at today’s event, told Soo Today “I find there is definitely a trend toward eating locally and organic.”
Helped out at the Farmers Market by his enthusiastic, energetic 7-year-old son Luke, Shawn exclaimed “I love it!”
Meat farmer Jack Tindall, whose home base is near Desbarats, told Soo Today “I used to sell cattle commercially, but I got off that bus, and everything we feed now is fed naturally.”
“In 24 months, I have a 750 pound carcass, and the extra age gives you more flavour in the meat, and business is booming!”
“I originally forecast a 30 percent growth in business, but we have a 70 to 80 percent growth, so things are really going well here at here at the Farmers Market here in Sault Ste. Marie!”
“Its basic food, like what the farmer would eat, and that’s what we’re selling.”
“Natural.”
For those of us “sweet tooths” who may have felt guilty browsing through the various green vegetables at the booths at the Farmers Market, take heart,
Sault native Jennifer Wilding was showing off her Chocolate Zucchini Cake, among other delicacies.
Chocolate Zucchini Cake?
Really?
“My mom has used zucchini all the time in all her cakes.”
“You hide the veggies in it, its hidden by all the chocolate, like a brownie, and the zucchini she uses is straight from the garden, we always try to make something new, you wouldn’t know the difference, we’ve always had a vegetable garden and we’ve always tried to combine that with things like chocolate.”
“It’s pretty much guilt free!”

speed7 9/12/2012 10:22:18 PM Report No offense I am all for fresh farmers market food grown locally. I think that`s great!
But the gateway site seems to always be on the back burner. I understand you want to see how this OLG modernization turns out and new owners of st mary`s paper as well... but still... people are not working and soon will be out of work. How about good paying jobs for us young people who want to live here. How much has the sault modernized in the last 25 years. Honestly. This sitting and waiting is kind of getting too old now!
I'm In 9/12/2012 10:35:21 PM ReportWho is this Mayor telling people that vegetables make you strong- when did she become a Dr., Deb why don't you run the city and get much needed employment here and not minimum wage jobs.
Snowdon 9/12/2012 11:04:06 PM ReportYou realize that a mayor isn't a dictator and can't just go make something happen? It's a whole process involving council, working together, etc.
Also, events like these are part of any mayors job - from the biggest cities to the smallest ones. It's short-sighted to see her at one event and say "you should be doing this instead" as if there is nothing else they are expected to do. Community events have always been part of a mayor's schedule.
Legend01 9/12/2012 11:27:53 PM ReportDoes the Mayor actually think people are going to go to a permanent farmers market when nobody goes to the one we have now. Putting one in the Gateway site is the dumbest idea of that entire proposal. We need something that will attract current residents and draw some tourists in to the city even if only an alternate destination to go to while in town for the train tour. This city just doesn't get it.
speed7 9/13/2012 12:37:51 AM ReportI know she just can't make things happen magically? She brought the subject up at this event so what's wrong with some feedback? She needs cooperation with local mp's and mpp,s to make things happen. It's been the waiting game for far too long........way beyond her term as mayor. Is that supposed to make it ok then?
Sam C 9/13/2012 8:31:24 AM ReportLegend... perhaps you don't go to the Farmer's Market, but there are very many who do. These farmers wouldn't haul their produce and products there twice a week just to enjoy each others' company.
Mr. Poster 9/13/2012 8:52:29 AM ReportSell the gateway site to ESSAR and let THEM put up needed reasonably priced housing for seniors wanting to leave their homes.I know many seniors(myself included) who find keeping a house up just getting to be too much. We would love to see some sort of small condo/aprtment living site that we could gravitate too. ESSAR has done a good job in this city and could help us out in this area as well.
speed7 9/13/2012 10:09:40 AM ReportEssar has done a good job. My point is it is no longer a canadian coroporation. They can pack up and take buisness elsewhere anytime? I hope not but hey harper loves to gift things away with huge tax breaks to the corprate managers and CEO's and the beaurocrates. That usually has after effects later on. That was my point. Nothing is forever and we just keep hanging by a thread in this city and it shouldnt be that way.
speed7 9/13/2012 11:07:49 AM ReportThis is what our mayor has to face when it comes to decisions in sault ste marie in the hands of a conservative regime. Not the mayor's fault of course... just proving a point read this article so you can see why our mayor's hands are tied. Conservatives powerful political games bieng played when they are in power. This proves my point and has serious effects on canadian steel company's.

joca 9/13/2012 11:11:57 AM ReportLegend You obviously have not been to the Farmer's Market lately, people are lined up waiting for them to open and it is very crowded. They badly need a bigger place.
Pakadeva 9/13/2012 12:40:51 PM ReportI personally think a permanent farmers market is an awesome idea! I have friends who go there regularly & are disappointed that things have actually sold out by the time they get to place their order in line. For those of us who work & can't get there at all, finally, we could actually shop there on a day off or on different hours than only twice weekly. Better, healthier food choices is definitely an asset to our city!
molder2 9/13/2012 1:16:13 PM ReportWe have to many vegtables at city hall now don`t need anymore! We need jobs Debbie not vegtables!Do something?
Stevie-E 9/13/2012 1:35:18 PM Report@I'm in,
You're American (so you claim, as seen in the thread for our new border building), so stop making unintelligent comments.
Are you a McDonald's advocate? Her statement about the vegetables was in fun and promoting wellness.
It's more than just a mayor that acts as a barrier to a city's growth. How about get yourself an education and maybe you would have a crack at something other than working at Family Video.
mr leahy 9/13/2012 5:11:35 PM ReportThe soo has a mayor?
molder2 9/13/2012 6:26:46 PM ReportWomen make the worst politicians!History reaping itself!
mirrorman 9/13/2012 8:59:57 PM ReportIt is truly amazing how a nice story about local businesses being supported by our government turns into a flame war.
Stevie-E 9/14/2012 10:49:26 AM Reportmolder,
What is "reaping" itself mean?
