So, what's the scoop on our bridge plaza?

Wondering when the new customs building on the Canadian side of the International Bridge will be ready?
According to Sault Ste. Marie MP Brian Hayes, Canada Customs should be moved into their new digs sometime in 2016.
That was one of the concerns brought up at City Hall on Tuesday night in consultation put on by Hayes.
Representatives from the Canada Border Services Agency, the US Department of Homeland Security and the International Bridge Authority were on hand to answer questions from the citizens in attendance.
Funding for the new building was announced in 2009, Hayes told the gathering that it was “possible” to lose the $44 million funding, but he added that he didn’t expect it to be an issue.
The new plaza slated to be built locally would have seven lanes available for traffic flowing into Ontario with the intention of all of them being in use at peak times of the day.
The current plaza does have some inefficiencies that have led to the inability to use one of the current lane, but Hayes said “rather than put a bunch of money into renovations, we’re going to have a new Canadian customs plaza.”
There are some staffing concerns as it stands now but Hayes told the gathering it was planned to have all booths in service with staff in place.
Many of the current concerns from citizens were regarding the lack of booths open as travellers return to the Canadian side of the bridge and why the U.S. Customs plaza could have all five booths open while open booths on the Canadian side were limited upon return.
All those in attendance agreed that staffing on the Canadian side plays a role in the lack of open booths.
Sandy Lucio, president of the Customs and Immigration union in Sault Ste. Marie, was in attendance at the consultation, and will be meeting with Hayes to discuss staffing issues, likely in early October when Hayes returns from Ottawa.
Much of the delay in the new plaza moving along has been due to property acquisitions taking longer than hoped or expected.
Hayes did say that the hope is that the acquisitions will be completed “within the next couple of months.”
Also discussed on Tuesday night was the possibility of adding lanes on the U.S. side of the border.
The hope is to have a dedicated truck lane while also having a dedicated lane for NEXUS card holders.
According to Phil Becker of the International Bridge Administration, a conceptual design is in place to add two more lanes southbound, which would be added to the final 800 feet of the bridge.
The hope is that the two lanes would help ease traffic going south.
The project would cost in the neighbourhood of $10 million and Becker noted that it isn’t something that is not in the cards for the foreseeable future.
Plans are in place to add a booth to the bus lane at U.S. customs, giving southbound travellers six customs lanes.
The consultation also cleared up a misconception for those who travel into the United States for extended periods on vacation.
Anyone traveling into the country from Canada is eligible to stay in the country for up to 180 days.
The 180-day period is consecutive as opposed to cumulative.
For each time a person travels into the country, a new 180-day period begins.

Stevie-E 9/12/2012 3:06:39 PM ReportYou can have all the booths open in the world and still have a slow experience at the border.

ttb 9/12/2012 11:02:07 PM ReportHey 'I'm In'
If all the Canadians left, your border complex would consist of a chicken coup manned by Barney Fyfe, and your beloved WalMart would be just a precious memory.
Hello DUM DUM
zardoz 9/13/2012 9:39:46 AM ReportDo we really need a new complex? to have one booth open? The best part of returning to Canada is there is no confusion as to what line will be the fastest....theres only ever one open. But when you get pulled in for your $128.00 purchase there will be 7-8 officers standing around in the office to assist you.
speed7 9/13/2012 10:39:29 AM ReportWasnt it harper himself that came here to the sault to visit the bridge plaza a few years ago and announced funding for the new plaza? That was around the same time when harper announced publicly canada was in good financial shape and he lied through his teeth! Yeah I figured we up north got pushed back... who cares about the sault? Your going to have to wait till 2016 now! WOW! Nice going Hayes! Also whats the point of retructuring for one more lane. I dont think that will make for an efficient traffic flow on both sides of the border. Seems like our US counterparts know how to do things... they built a bigger casino we get a small tent, their new border is huge we get a small one ? And just 2 years later haveing a blue coat meeting and say.....sorry sault ste marie we missed the boat? Spend 10 million on close to what we aleady have? Put it towards something else dont bother. Get some buisness up here with good paying jobs. Since you've been dishing out corporate tax breaks and all our canadian corportions shipped overseas how about trying to doing a switch up and get some jobs up here!
speed7 9/13/2012 11:55:59 AM ReportThe article is what I was able to find on the bridge plaza inital announcement in 2009 by harper in sault ste marie

You've got to be kidding me right now!
Lucky I get let in? What did I do to you? Listen if you want to start fightin words, you're barking up the wrong tree chum!
Sault Michigan would not exist without Canadians entering it on a regular basis to frequent the University, the one or two stores we can save money at, gas stations, restaurants and bars, the casino or any other worthwhile trip.
Why are you reading our news anyway, nothing much goin on over there?
Get a life.
I'm In 9/13/2012 5:22:35 PM ReportHey Stevie-e and ttb: our Wal-mart wasn't built for you, you come over to save money and not pay taxes, you have one and one on the way, we were never a ghost town nor will we ever be one. ttb 9/14/2012 9:00:52 AM ReportThanks for letting me know about the internet being worldwide. Now I can find out where Battle Creek is!....... Holy Crap, what a DUMP!
Stevie-E 9/14/2012 10:47:21 AM ReportLOL
I'm in...You're quite the wordsmith writing on here, and it shows you "ain't" educated...especially in business. I only get upset when people like you make stupid comments.
I am quite positive that well over half of Sault, Michigan's pool of business revenues is a result of Canadians frequenting that side, not to save taxes (if anything, we are sometimes double-taxed at 6% and 13%)
Our border is not even CLOSE to as much of a clusterf___k as the US side. Not only is the design flawed, causing huge bottlenecks, but the agents take far too long. It's a fact and if you view the bridge webcam, you'll see what I mean.
