Ontario putting students and families first
McGuinty government protecting the classroom experience, fighting the deficit
The passage of the Putting Students First Act [today] protects the gains made in education while ensuring that the next two school years will be free from labour disruptions.
The Putting Students First Act - based on the memorandum of understanding between the government and the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA) - gives school boards, teachers and support staff until December 31 to engage in local collective bargaining and accept agreements consistent with the government's fiscal and policy priorities.
These priorities include maintaining investments in full-day kindergarten, keeping class sizes small and protecting funds earmarked for the classroom.
Over the next two years, the Putting Students First Act will save taxpayers $2 billion.
Eliminating Ontario's deficit is the single most important step toward growing the economy, protecting and creating jobs, and preserving gains made in education.
The McGuinty government is committed to working with all of its partners in education to eliminate the deficit while continuing to protect the classroom experience.
"This legislation is another way our government is taking strong action to put students first and to maintain Ontario’s reputation as a world leader in publicly funded education. We’re working hard to protect the extraordinary gains we’ve made together in education over the last nine years," said Laurel Broten, Minister of Education
Quick facts
The Putting Students First Act is retroactive to September 1 and requires that any automatic pay increases received after August 31 are paid back.
The government has already signed agreements with OECTA and the Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens, which together represent more than half of Ontario’s school boards and 55,000 teachers.
The government has also signed an agreement with the Association of Professional Student Services Personnel and almost 3,000 education assistants.
Ontario's schools will be safer, more accepting and inclusive places to learn this year thanks to the passage of the Accepting Schools Act - giving all students the support they need to grow and reach their full potential.
70 percent of Grades 3 and 6 students are mastering reading, writing and math - an increase of 16 percentage points since 2003.
More high school students are graduating than ever before - now up to 82 percent, from 68 percent in 2003-04.

PlasmaX 9/11/2012 2:55:56 PM ReportAgreed!! Teachers make more than a decent living, have an excellent pension, and have the summer off. What is there to complain about? Try moving to the States and teaching there.
Sam C 9/11/2012 3:33:29 PM ReportI won't dispute that teachers make a reasonably decent living, but the issue isn't as black-and-white as that.
eadiecougs 9/11/2012 4:01:51 PM Reportthe liberals caused this mass spending and now they are blaming teachers. The smoke screen is children and families first which is nonsense .If they cared about families and children they would of curbed their spending when they were elected.I think the government should take a wage freeze period.today its teachers tommorow it could be any other union job. the fact that a government is taking away a right of the people and call it a law for families and children first is all B>S
Stefanie 9/11/2012 4:10:18 PM ReportWhat the public is forgetting is the support staff! Secretaries, educational assistants and care staff are also having their wages frozen, even though they make a fraction of what the teachers do. Their rights have been taken away right along with the teachers. They all belong to the same union. This bill is going to hurt them the most! The support staff are all stuck making less than $30,000 a year for the next two years, while still raising their families and paying astronomical gas prices to get to work!
cooker_eh 9/11/2012 4:11:22 PM ReportPlasma - I detect a hint of jealousy in you as in many people. I feel the same about pro sports and actors only I realize they do more harm than good for our kids compared to teachers. Remember, you had the same opportunity to go to school and become a teacher as everyone else. I suspect you just weren't smart enough.
geterdun 9/11/2012 4:31:22 PM ReportIf I were a teacher aid what ever I would be using my sick days up thanks......LMAO
myself 9/11/2012 5:22:21 PM ReportI believe that its called Social Communism, with a hint of Dictatorship.Regardless of what these teachers make, its the fact that their right to negotiate an agreement has been taken away and one forced upon them. The wage freeze is irrelevant.
little lulu 9/11/2012 5:28:37 PM ReportIt's a sad state affairs when a government dedicated to "putting students first" continues to bad mouth teachers, in turn causing parents to have negative feelings towards their children's teachers.....I am sick and tired of, "they get summers off and only work six hours a day"..I am not defending my job choice and I will NEVER tell someone in another profession that their job is easy because I have NO WAY of knowing that...if it's so easy to be a teacher, go back to school and BE one!
Dictionary 9/11/2012 7:02:39 PM Reportconservative and liberal interference in the collective bargaining process is going to drive organized labour right back to the NDP.
W. Yote 9/11/2012 7:46:12 PM ReportThe pendulum has swung too far in favour of teachers and its time it starts coming back. Teachers work for the public and have to answer to them. Right now I have a feeling the vast majority of the public has no sympathy for teachers. If this were a case of inhumane working conditions or unfair wages, I would agree the government is in the wrong. In this case I would say they are applying common sense where teachers clearly are not. They are too used to getting what they want because nobody wants to see their children miss any school when teachers threaten to strike.
eadiecougs 9/11/2012 8:04:04 PM Reportthis country is becoming the old russia .The government is taking away the rights of the people by making up bogus laws .The airlines were told the same thing 'back to work because it would effect the country bogus use more rail and transportation
cityhallguy 9/11/2012 8:26:07 PM ReportMaybe they should have created a bill that would not allow pensioned teachers to continue to teach and take away jobs from young wanna-be teachers! Let's get the youth working!!! I know this is getting off-topic, but I know way too many bright minds that can't get a job because these temp positions are filled by pensioners!!!
TwoB 9/11/2012 9:00:22 PM ReportMaybe we the people who own the government should cancel politicians raises and limit them to only a single pension plan the same as the rest of our senior citizens. I bet that alone would really help to lower the debt.

PlasmaX 9/12/2012 12:07:14 AM ReportTo Cooker_Eh: You missed the mark on that one - I have the same Omers pension that the teachers have and I'm quite happy with the living I make. I have a lot of friends that are teachers and they are also quite happy with their job and do not feel a need to strike. Also I think that most teacher's are hardworking and deserve to make a good living but I (and I'm sure most people would agree) do not believe that teacher's should have ever had a right to bank their sick time. Do you think that they should? Or were you just attempting to insult me because I made you look silly on your post about the Pine street subdivision?
PlasmaX 9/12/2012 12:08:58 AM ReportCooker Eh: It's late ... lol .. i meant North Street subdivision
shaddow 9/13/2012 4:35:25 AM ReportThe more screw ups by the control freaking Liberals make me feel I am in a communist country & being dictated to by a bunch of dictating lunatics. I am a young person going to school & trying to get my grade 12 completed. The teachers at Northland Adult Learning are very helpful to assist anyone with help & never complain. Teachers are teachers, no matter were they are teaching, & the teachers at Northland deserve a bouquet for their dedicated help to all the students in our school. Thanks to you all.......

Wow McMilky... you really are milking the public perception now aren'nt you?
This will save 2 billion in tax payer money? What the hell did you do with all those taxes collected from all those salaries in the first place?
I know what would save more... how about you taking a pay cut and a wage freeze for 10 years! That might save Trillions. You and your powerfull ties to those beurocrats in the educational system, you know the pencil and paper pushers who are abuse our educational system every day! But no you cant, since you have your backroom deals snuggly in place dont you?
Your "deficit" is a problem you created in the first place? Stop pussy footing in the media. This is just plain childish of you.
