On September 8 at approximately 10:20 a.m., Fire Services received a 911 call to a single family residence In the 100 block of Third Line East.
Upon arrival, fire crews witnessed heavy smoke venting from the home.
Crews extinguished the fire and ventilated the structure.
As a result of the fire, the home received extensive thermal and smoke damage throughout.
Fire Services investigation determined that the fire’s origin to be within a closet caused by a malfunctioning air exchanger.
The fire is not considered suspicious.
The occupants of the home were awake at the time of the fire and were initially alerted by a burning odour.
At the time they discovered smoke in the basement area, the smoke alarms sounded.
“Once this fire took off, conditions in the home deteriorated rapidly. If this fire occurred in the middle of the night, the occupants would have had much less time to escape,” reports Fire Prevention Officer Celetti. “The message for Fire Prevention Week this year is to know two ways out. This very well could have been a situation where the second way out would be a lifesaver.”
