'Canada is aiming to divide First Nation communities'

NEWS RELEASE

ANISHINABEK NATION

****************************
First Nations facing more fiscal attacks

On the heels of recent cuts to First Nation services in such key areas as health and social services, the federal government is further marginalizing First Nation organizations by cutting core funding.

“It’s a shame that Canada has decided to cut First Nation budgets in order to justify its attacks on First Nations in general,” says Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief Patrick Madahbee. “Canada has made a lot of statements about how they want to work with First Nations, yet every time we turn around they’re cutting funding to health, social services and other key areas that impact First Nations peoples’ day‐to‐day lives. Let’s be truthful here, Canada is aiming to divide First Nation communities so they can create a vacuum in order to gain control over our people and our land.”

“It’s clear to me that Canada and even Ontario to a degree, has three objectives when it comes to First Nations people‐ divide, control and conquer,” says Madahbee. “Our people need to know that they are under attack. The unilateral, incremental changes to policy and legislation regarding First Nation land, water and rights are in direct violation of Constitutional rights, treaty rights and even international human rights that Canada has endorsed.”

The Grand Council Chief points to a number of legislative bills introduced by the Harper government that First Nations and First Nation organizations continue to oppose based on jurisdiction.

“We’ve seen this type of attack on First Nations before. They’ve tried residential schools, they’ve funneled our young people into their jails and now they’re cutting funding where we were already underfunded to begin with.

“What the federal government fails to understand is that no matter what tactics they use to divide us we will never be Canadian citizens and we will never surrender our land. We are Anishnaabe and have always been Nations with our own land, our own culture, our own language and our own identity.”

The Anishinabek Nation established the Union of Ontario Indians as its secretariat in 1949.

The UOI is a political advocate for 39 member communities across Ontario, representing approximately 55,000 people.

The Union of Ontario Indians is the oldest political organization in Ontario and can trace its roots back to the Confederacy of Three Fires, which existed long before European contact.

"yet every time we turn around they’re cutting funding to health, social services and other key areas that impact First Nations peoples’ day‐to‐day lives"

Oh puuleeeeze? The cuts impact every Canadian's day to day life, not just the First Nations people. Of course if some people are continuely living off of social services, will not work and pay no taxes to help support our economy, I can see where they might feel the pinch. As it should be!

d_rains

Really?? What did you go through? Are you 145 years old?

Okay so live on your own land without the infrastructure that "Canadians" have put in place the last 145 years and see how far you get and how far in the dark-ages you will be.

I'm okay with it if you are.
Mik 9/7/2012 12:19:10 PM Report

The system sucks for EVERYONE.
Tommy2Toes 9/7/2012 12:23:43 PM Report

d_rains...I agree that you deserve the same funding we get....IF you were Canadian citizens, but apparently you're not, according to your own leaders.
Slim Shady 9/7/2012 12:27:15 PM Report

Everyone in this country needs to wake up... WE ARE IN DEBT UP TO OUR EYEBALLS! It doesn't matter what government we vote in, the interest on past and present debt is killing us. The solution is either to jack up taxes through the roof or cut back on what we are spending. Both options come at a cost. People can't afford a huge increase in taxes and service cuts will lower our standard of life. (BTW last time I visited Emergency in our new hospital I had to wait 5 hours too).

Under attack?.... Never be Canadians? Give your head a shake? Why should First Nations people not feel the fiscal cut backs like the rest of Canadians. You complain about cuts to essential services but are reluctant to pay taxes or fees to enjoy them? Our government has cut back our programs and health care too.

I don't give a #$%^ what treaties were signed by someone in England 150 years ago for fur pelts and logging... Today things are different and we must all pay into the system to reap its rewards otherwise we will become a third world country.

Any leader that tells his people that the rest of Canada is conspiring to take them is irresponsible and creating a racist divide among all peoples. Fear mongering helps nothing.
angens 9/7/2012 1:21:59 PM Report

@Slim Shady, "Fear mongering" now why so ever should the Indians fear the Canadian government? hmmm...
Mik 9/7/2012 1:31:40 PM Report

Fear mongering (or scaremongering): The use of fear to influence the opinions and actions of others towards some specific end.
bluesslinger 9/7/2012 1:53:22 PM Report

One word sums this up.

Treaties.
jean-paul 9/7/2012 2:03:20 PM Report

And yet the first nations treat the Metis the same way as the government treats them. You should embrace all Metis people ,together we stand and divided we fall.Just using your language.
bulletcards 9/7/2012 2:14:36 PM Report

so let me get this straight. cutting funding in health care services etc. for non first nations people ok? but if we take one cent away from any funding for first nation peoples not ok? sounds to me like first nations cheifs and elders are the ones dividing first nation communities from the REST of Canada. Are they not clear that Canada, Ontario and the world economy are in debt and serious trouble? We all have to surrender something to come out of this with our heads above water. tired of press releases that do nothing but try to spark anger, resentment and fear by FN cheifs. This type of press only divides us further apart when we NEED to band together to overcome very difficult times.
fullstringer 9/7/2012 2:35:15 PM Report

"One word sums this up.

Treaties."

The gov't see's fit to change negotiated contracts with it's public sector all the time. They can darn well do it to the treaties also! Agreements made a few hundred years ago have nothing to do with today's world. This country is going bankrupt and the First nations just keep expecting more and more. It's got to stop!
Dead End Kid 9/7/2012 3:39:35 PM Report

Sometimes I feel ashamed about what our fore fathers did to the North American aboriginal tribes. Many tribes from the 1600's on into the 19th century, the white men from Europe had stole, cheated, murdered and made slaves out of the aboriginal people. Imagine people from the other side of the world invading your native homeland and then having the nerve to "boot" you out to make room for themselves. This is exactly what happened regardless of all the John Wayne movies you may have watched in the past. We, as a people can never in a million years make up for the wrongs bestowed upon them.
Dead End Kid 9/7/2012 6:24:19 PM Report

I applaud you Tommy2toes that you speak the truth. You are correct in saying that you are not Canadian. When will the government and the people of Canada acknowledge the fact that the white man invaded the homeland of the original tenants, the aboriginal people. The situation today in Canada as well as the United States is epidemic without any real solutions in sight. Our European fore fathers created this situation that we are in today. I have read that when Columbus reached San Salvadore, the Tainos Indians welcomed them with open arms. In return the white man kidnapped them and made slaves out of them and also forced them into Chrisianity. Today the problems for the aboriginals are monumental all because of what the white man has done . How do we fix it? I don't have a clue. The government can begin with humble dialogue instead of "throwing a bone" at the aboriginals every once in while then looking the other way. Much has documented through the last few centuries about the truth of our history. It is sad we were not told the real truth in school as to what really happened. Oh by the way, I am a white man and I apologize to all First Nation people, living and dead for the sins of my fore fathers. May God have mercy on our souls.
Mik 9/7/2012 6:55:04 PM Report

Honest question:

If we could SOLVE the problem with the wave of a wand, exactly WHAT, (in the best case scenario), would be the solution to the Aboriginal Peoples?

(Keeping in mind, I'm eliminating the "Everyone NOT Aboriginal, please GTFO" because that's simply not an option.)
MartyMudd 9/7/2012 7:52:45 PM Report

Suck it up. We are all Canadians. We all pay taxes.....oh wait....
Dead End Kid 9/7/2012 10:19:21 PM Report

Hey Slim Shady. when you destroy something precious that was not yours to begin with, you are obligated to make things right no matter how long ago it happened.
speed7 9/8/2012 9:11:52 PM Report

I think its the speratists aiming to divide Canada if you ask me? I dont see how funding was a lack thereof.
Direct from Brain Hayes flyer:

Garden River 263,697
Garden River 7,607,000
Garden River 7,817,000
Garden River 7,930,378
Batchewana 4,864,000 million
batchewana 193,000
Batchewana 81,078
Missanabie Cree 39,240
Nebenagochin Heritage 135,000
children of shingwauk 1,002,382

Oh and I am missing that hefty 4.7 million sitting in a trust fund in batchewana since 1997 that cant be touched because they cannot round up 400 votes from the band so the money can be used for the community. Lovely one that was on the news a few weeks ago!

Uhmmm Hmmmm! Canada is dividing its seperatists. I think Canada has it`s share of troulbles right now . I guess all these funds have dried up foolishly and too soon. How about taking a class on budgeting your dollars and not using the whining ploy again. Its just not credible anymore. Sorry. the truth hurts..... but it does!
speed7 9/8/2012 9:15:54 PM Report

let me add as for the anishinabek, I do feel sorry for what happened to the people living in those condiions Harper did not handle that one very well but here up north, you did very well at that!
speed7 9/8/2012 9:58:01 PM Report

Also and sorry for saying this , all I keep hearing back from speratists here is
Treaties, mistreatment by white man, obligations. That sounds very robot like and repetative. I think generation after generation is bieng taught this way of thinking. This is what is halting you from living in the present by habitually and obsessively living in the past. You wanted to live tax free on your territory and you do. Get your act together , watch where your money goes, jot it down in a journal and keep your eyes on your chief`s and leaders who mishandle your finacial goverment obligations then. I think the government needs to hire a mediator who makes sure the money goes where it needs to going. Your leaders are the problem they need to be watched and supervised. But I know they do not want interference. You cant have it both ways and you need to realize this. Should really be ashamed because this list of money is plenty enough.
speed7 9/8/2012 10:25:43 PM Report

Dead End Kid, I appreciate your words on christopher columbus, in a perspective, why not say look at african americans who not only didnt choose to be slaves, were forcefully striped from there own land, taken to another`foreign land and were beaten, broken, raped, treated like slaves in the USA. They had it pretty bad. There history was miserable and horrific. Yet in that respect today they are probably the most patriotic people in the states. They did not claim to be different. They got educated, assimilated with society, faced alot of racisim and discriminaion which took a centuries to repair, They grew roots in their communities and are the most patriotic people to their country, They do not speak words of hate or treason or say they are ashamed to be americans. They went through a hell of alot, yet they never speak harsh words nor demand anything or get anything in return for their bad suffering. Its all in your frame of mind. You chose to accept where you want to be today and if are not willing to accept that, then you dont get much from your efforts.
speed7 9/9/2012 8:18:14 PM Report

I agree somewhat about the comment of bieng ashamed of our fore fathers but in the history of wars and battles all over the world as there were many with crude examples of mistreatment . Countries took over land and so forth. England did not want to give Italy access to the straights of Gibraltar for trading goods and hence the post depression of world war one. Inhabitants forced to move to another country for jobs. Did they cry about their country's obligations who basically abandoned them? NO. They took the responsibility found work in another country. Its all in your mindset.
I tally'd the dollars above and its
30,0000 million dollars. Where did all this money go people??? wake up and talk to your leaders and ask why? Why you are still living in poverty? So unfair and so many corrupt people its totally ridiculous.
