NDP wins key by-election - Liberals fail to get majority

Friday, September 07, 2012   by: Rick McGee

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and his Liberals won one provincial by-election last night and lost another.

The results leave the government in a minority situation.

NDP candidate Catherine Fife claimed victory in Kitchener-Waterloo.

Her Progressive Conservative opponent finished second, well behind the winner.

The Liberal standard-bearer was third, thousands of votes behind Fife.

Forum Research accurately predicted the NDP win based on recent polling, as reported by SooToday.com on Wednesday.

McGuinty created the opening in Kitchener-Waterloo by offering the former PC MPP - Elizabeth Witmer - a $180,000 job in the provincial bureaucracy.

She stepped down to take the post, resulting in the need for a by-election.

With Witmer out of the way, Liberals thought they could capture the vacant seat en route to a slim majority in the 107-seat Legislature.

Unhappy teachers were a key factor in the result, with many abandoning the Liberals and moving to the NDP.

The by-election in Vaughan went as widely expected.

Liberal candidate Steven Del Duca won easily.

He replaces Greg Sorbara, who retired.

The PC and NDP candidates placed second and third, respectively.

Detailed results for both ridings can be viewed at the Elections Ontario website by selecting the electoral districts in the area indicated.

That is the problem with our economy, the beurocrates making 180,000.00. Their political games bieng played to gain votes. If a majority of teachers voted Mcguinty out Good! It will only be of benefit to your children folks! They were armed to dismantle education. Its become a freakfest and I hope the libs stop with their manipulation which shows how deep they are sinking in there misery.
I sure hope the PC's dont try to make any stupid mnoves now?
