Sarah Nelson receives standing ovation. And a special medal

"She's definitely the youngest recipient in the Algoma region," MPP David Orazietti told SooToday.com last night regarding nine-year-old Sarah Nelson, one of 44 area residents who were presented with Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals during an awards ceremony at the Legion Hall.
Orazietti went on to say that he's confident she's among the youngest in the entire province.
The young Saultlebrity received a standing ovation when emcee, Mayor Debbie Amaroso, announced her name - rightfully so.
In just 15 months, Nelson has raised just over $5,000 for the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) through the sale of her adorable candies, cakes, cookies and chocolates, known locally as Sarah Bugs Sweet Treats.
Nelson found out a month ago that she would be awarded the Diamond Jubilee Medal, and has a special shadow box set aside in her room to proudly display the honour.
For fans of her tasty confections, there's no fear of the little entrepreneur giving up the endeavour any time in the near future - Nelson told us she plans to keep Sarah Bugs Sweet Treats going for a long, long time.

SAULT STE. MARIE - Bryan Hayes, MP and David Orazietti, MPP are pleased to announce the recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals for Sault Ste. Marie and area.
The medals were presented last night at a celebration held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25.
MP Hayes stated: “On behalf of Prime Minister Harper, I would like to extend congratulations to all Queen’s Diamond Jubilee recipients. I would also like to thank the numerous individuals who submitted nominations for giving of their time to bring to the committee’s attention the many accomplishments of not only the medal recipients, but of all nominees. The quality of candidates is a testament of what an outstanding community we have and one I know we are all proud of.”
“Tonight’s medal presentation honours individuals in our community by recognizing the significant contributions they have made to the Sault and area,” said David Orazietti, MPP. “On behalf of the Province and the Premier, I extend my sincere congratulations to the recipients of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medals and thank each of the nominees for their continued exemplary service to our community.”
This new commemorative medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th Anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada and honours her life-long commitment to her responsibilities, by recognizing those who have made significant contributions to Ontario and Canada.
MP Hayes and MPP Orazietti established an independent selection committee to review all nominations.
The local committee, chaired by Mayor Debbie Amaroso included Bryan Hayes MP, David Orazietti MPP, Dr. David Walde, Victoria Chiappetta, Dr. Lou Lukenda and Donna Ford.
This committee selected nominations based on the criteria set out by the Governor General, with final validation being provided by The Chancellery of Honours.

Sarah does not have a facebook account.. her company does.

Lorilee 9/7/2012 9:05:42 PM ReportSipKing all I have to say to you is this. She is a nine year old girl, of course she's going to have help, that doesn't mean ANYTHING. She is taking time out of her day to do something nice for others. Whether its 50% of her profits or 100% it doesn't matter, she's still giving to a charity then putting money aside for school. Let me ask you, have you donated nearly as much as this young woman to a charity? Probably not. If you have something rude to say, keep it too yourself, she is a young girl trying to help people who are ill, give her some respect and credit. I don't know many nine year old's who would rather help sick people then play at a park.
Good job Sarah, you are such an inspiration to this town and all the younger ones growing up here. Keep it up.

No need to rain on her parade because your child probably has not close accomplished what sarah bug has and has family support, dedication and motivation to do something she loves!
Just a question , at nine years old would you let your child bake alone, unsupervised?? .. Obviously her mom is going to support her and help her!
At 9, I know I would be nervous in front of a class and not in my own home , maybe that's why she fumbled (or so you say she did)?
Keep up the GREAT work sarah ! Our community is lucky to have a young entrepreuer like yourself !

What have you done for anyone in our community lately? Sarah, hold your head high girl! Like I have said many times before you are going places in life and are a secial young lady. There will always be unhappy people who try to bring you down, ignore them, dry your tears and realize you are better than them. Keep up the good work. If you knew her you would know exactly why she does this. As I have said many times Sarah is an "old soul"..if you don't know what that means google it and get your facts straight before you make such mean and spiteful comments concerning my grandaughter and her family. What you have said is so not true. An apology would be the right thing to do here.

I know her family and I know the pride and joy that Sarah HERSELF takes in doing what she does for her customers and the families that need hospice care. Sarah has touched more people than you could ever realize directly and indirectly. When my grandfather died she made a beautiful basket of goodies and she was glad she could do something to help. Kudos to those who help her...it can't be easy to keep up with all the orders. It's INCREDIBLE and I applaud her family for supporting her this far and continuing to support her on this journey! Sarah - DON'T GIVE UP KIDDO!!! There are some people that envy what you are doing and wish they could have accomplished what you have already. Some people like SipKing say things because they're trying to put others down to make themselves feel better. Obviously this person needs a lesson in kindness - ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS - keep doing what you're doing and show the world the AMAZING YOUNG WOMAN YOU ARE and be grateful for the LOVE and SUPPORT from your family...that's something else not everyone has...WE LOVE YOU SARAH!!!!!
As for you SipKing - I won't waste my breath because if you need to post things like that you're either A)Not worth our time or B) Crying out for help...maybe you desire the love and support that Sarah has in her family and cannot get it - if you change your attitude, you might get that love and support someday! To anyone who does not believe in Sarah and her Sweet Treats...that is okay you don't have to purchase them or enjoy them that is your right but it is my right to be able to purchase her fantastic treats and enjoy them. So I for one will continue to support this little girl and help her help others that is what I will do!

My opinion is that Sarah is a wonderful child with a heart of gold. Most children today are "me" focused, unlike Sarah who is trying to give a little extra to those who are leaving this world. And her moms are incredible to give so much support to Sarah with her achievements. An exceptional child is formed by exceptional parents...keep it up!

The negative comments are from someone who is a) probably homophobic, b) ill mannered, c) probably sits on their butt and doesn't DO for charity and lastly d) heard something from someone about something and got the story wrong. Oh and too scared to interview with SooToday staff unlike the adorable Sarah who at her age is helping people and not causing trouble.
By engaging this person in any other comments is merely stroking an ego unworthy.

I have a question. HOW MUCH HAVE YOU DONATED TO LOCAL CHARITIES THIS YEAR?
If you have ever got any sweet treats you would know that 50% of the donations go to ARCH. The other 50% goes into a college fund for Sarah. This is more than most charities get from organizations.
And...if her mom(s) help her, keep in mind she is NINE....and may need some guidance and help. That is okay. She is doing this for GOOD.
SipKing...please tell us a little about what you do for this community...other than drink too much. And PLEASE brush up on spelling and grammar if you are going to comment. Thank you.

We live in a free society with the beautiful thing called free speech. You are allowed to say what you feel. The sad thing is that you feel this way.

The number of parents and their gender doesn't seem to be ill-influencing Sarah at all, so I see no need to bring it up. I would seriously question things in this world if Sarah's parents didn't have a hand in her endeavours. She is a little girl, doing GIANT things in the Soo and Area. I can't imagine a grown up doing it all by themselves; school, friends; baking, and whatever else she has going on in her life. I have seen pictures of her after she has fallen asleep reading baking books for ideas. I'm sure that it's easy to find fault in others when you're perfect. But to the rest of us, she IS a hero, in a little tiny package, and for that, SHE ROCKS!!! As for your food for thought, who do you think baked it? ;) I hope you feel big tonight, because in the morning, you'll still be the loser you were this morning, SipKing.

It just really burned me that someone could say such cruel things about a little girl that does such great things for this community.
And, as for her being a FRONT...a front for what? Her and her parents spend alot of their time making these treats and have donated THOUSANDS of dollars to ARCH. I am not sure I understand....do you think they are secretly making millions and pocketing it? Come on.
