NDP to MNR: Consult before you cut
QUEEN’S PARK – In light of looming cuts to the Ministry of Natural Resources, NDP Natural Resources Critic Sarah Campbell called on Minister Gravelle to lay out a clear plan for the cuts, and to consult with affected communities.
“Recently, the government made it clear that MNR cuts are coming. Communities across the north, such as Ignace, have serious concerns these cuts will mean the closure of local MNR offices, and with them, the loss of a significant number of the community’s jobs.” said Campbell.
Campbell, the MPP for Kenora Rainy River, referenced the recent cuts to the Bear Wise program.
The cuts, introduced without notice or consultation, downloaded bear management duties to local police, who often lack the facilities and resources to deal with bear issues.
“We all understand the need to tighten our belts, given the current financial situation, but cuts to offices in Ignace and other communities today will have serious economic impacts tomorrow,” said Campbell. “For example, community leaders are now worried about reopening Ignace Sawmill and the Bending Lake Iron Ore Mine because of the local expertise that these cuts take away.”
Given the criticisms of recent cuts, and fears about coming cuts, Campbell asked the Minister to commit today to full public disclosure and consultation before any cuts are made.
“Will the Premier commit to holding off on cuts until municipalities, First Nations and members of the public can have meaningful input?” asked Campbell.

Cheeze dont you people get it its a Liberal dictatorship, you dont have a say!!!!!!!!!now run along.......
XtraKrusty 9/6/2012 5:16:58 PM ReportDont worry about MNR staff they will all get a major chunk of public land to "Manage" as they call themselves "outfitters" they will also be given a thousand year lease on some gorgeous inland lake and pay a fraction in lease payments that you pay for your little beach lot. Not to mention their pensions that are more than a private sector workers' paycheque! WAHHH the cash cow is drying up!
speed7 9/6/2012 5:21:40 PM ReportThe cuts will come from any government doesnt matter now. The MNR here will face devastating job losses. Since mike harris they have been loosing jobs and freezing wages. The damage was dont a long time ago. The NDP have become even better at cutting out important funding and they hide behind the liberals shadow hopeing no one will notice. This kind of political trickery doesnt fool me! There all the freakin same lefties and righties.
speed7 9/6/2012 5:24:23 PM ReportThe cash cow is in your brain , moronic brain fart. Jealousy that's all. Pure jealousy! Like you are in need of entitlement or something.
XtraKrusty 9/6/2012 5:33:30 PM ReportJealous?? damn right I am!I work in the private sector and make 1/3 of what comparable MNR employee gets paid, I'd love to live in a new house too but I refuse to pay those taxes that go with it. Get it through your heads that you cant bleed the public any more! We are all tapped out!we are tired of busting our humps so you MNR employees get to live the high life with new trucks/cars etc etc etc...
XtraKrusty 9/6/2012 5:50:47 PM Reportmike harris: Mike Harris, loosing:losing, damage:dammage, dont:done, hopeing: hoping, There:they're. This kind of political trickery doesnt fool me! You must work for the government, believe me buddy I'm sure alot of things fool you because you just dont get it!
XtraKrusty 9/6/2012 6:03:51 PM ReportHmmm, now thats humiliating you were right about Damage DOH!
I'm In 9/6/2012 9:08:35 PM ReportXtraKrusty: Its not the MNR Front Line Workers it is the Managers, Execs., and Deputy Ministers @ MNR that are draining the coffers, you need to get your facts straight
speed7 9/7/2012 2:36:26 AM ReportKrusty the clown thinks the average mnr employee makes big wages?? Have you ever asked one how much ? Fool! Not much more than your primate sector ass jealous moron!
Keep crying.....baby..... " oh they have a bigger house than me! Why? Sniffle ...sniffle. Crocodile tears.......nothing more. Get your facts straight ! Get a life , stop chasing someone else's
speed7 9/7/2012 2:45:36 AM ReportI do not work for the public sector . My applogies for the typos , small keyboard here. Make fun. Like I care what trash comes out of your mouth.
You are an idiot ! Plain and simple. Waiste of time speaking with brain farts like you.
Jitterbug 9/7/2012 4:47:51 AM ReportWe need to see what is going to be cut.Its hopefully not fish stocking programs,or lamprey controls.Conservation officers ,ok,as they do realy very little to stop the poaching. Its all about screwing some retired old fart because he took a beer with him ice fishing,or does not have the right colored helmet.People are not out fishing and hunting like they used to be,as no one wants to drive 150 or so miles ,only to catch 1 poor fish that is 1cm undersize, then make the choice to be a violater or not!
XtraKrusty 9/7/2012 9:15:31 PM ReportSpeed7 I think you win the prize for childish cliches, so mature there buddy! language like that is usually a substitute for a limited vocabulary, which supports my original comment. I usually dont respond to people like you but you have kept me amused so I will continue. I am very happy with my life, I have a beautiful wife, a job I love and a very nice home. Not many can honestly say that but I really am very lucky and appreciate all I have. and I do it with a very modest paycheque by being responsible and carefully managing every penny. My comments referred to the fact that if the taxes on a newly constructed home were alot more reasonable I would have built one this year, therefore employing carpenters, electricians plumbers well you get the picture. I refuse to build until our government gets things under control. This province is swimming in ever increasing debt and we are passing it on to our children at an alarming rate something has to give! MNR employees seem to only care about themselves and have little regard for the taxpayers footing the bills, you can live a good life on alot less than what they are paid. This is the "me generation" and the generation of entitlement and they're sinking us all.
By the way I dont have to ask someone in the MNR what they make I worked for the MNR I do know the waste, Ive seen it with my own eyes.
XtraKrusty 9/8/2012 12:27:50 PM ReportIf you can just sit back and look at the big picture for just a moment think about this; a child born today already owes the Government of Ontario about $20,559. and the government of Canada $17,000 and its increasing steadily, what will they think of our generation when they will be born into slavery because of us by the time they are ready to work. government must 1) balance the budget 2) debt reduction. Everyone knows these cuts need to happen but everyone says but dont cut me its someone elses fault were in this mess, We cant borrow our way out of this hole! We are all heading for a cliff isn't anyone gonna stop this bus we are all in this together and there's only 1 seatbelt!
speed7 9/10/2012 1:08:59 AM Reportkrusty , your mode of thinking is severly limited. Just keep that nice house of yours with all that modest income you make working in the private sector then, and stop attacking MNR employees who dont make a that "modest income" like you. I am a very educated person
I dont need you , to evaluate my vocabulary either. Its fine.
It seems you are enjoying amusing me more than I you?
When I sit back and look and the big picture I see modest income earners like you having a nice nest in then bank , retiring and comfortable in your life. So no, we are all not in the same boat with the same seatbelt on.
Our children ( younger generation) will not retire or have modest incomes or be even able to pay those government taxes like you suggest because the government is doing a splendid job of removing the middle class. This means no one working and our economy will continue to slide.
Simple no jobs = no one paying taxes = poor quality of life. You think this young generation will work hard like you and I? Oh no. We are all not wearing the same seatbelt at all. If you think your income is'nt comparable to an MNR employee, think again, long and hard before you attack. Now you can continue with your amusement if you want but I simply do not care. As far as I am concerned, you are a descriminatory with no class. Besides that, most modest middle income earners are snobby, rude, and have an inflated ego and I see that hold true for you. I think an attitude adjustment was in order for you. Go ahead, attack back and reciprocate with posts back to me all you want. Your statements are all hot air blowing in the wind going no where!
speed7 9/10/2012 7:12:34 AM ReportKrusty what income figure were you thinking of when you first stated that you make only one third of? I am interested in what type of position as well. Be more specific? A technician ? A scientist? A manager? Branch administrator? What then ?
speed7 9/10/2012 7:28:53 AM ReportAnyone who uses a homer Simpson word like DOH in their vocabulary is severely limited just like the carricature, I am curious. if you will attempt to awnser my previous question ?
Thim 9/10/2012 8:33:54 AM ReportThe MNR is typical public entity that's bloated beyond comprehension.
An auditor should be involved in cleaning house, not the people responsible for the mess.
And Yes, the MNR does allow staff to obtain public lands for personal use which includes leases for outfitting which till a year ago were only $125 per year with MNR staff patrolling the area to make sure the public didn't show up to affect the "solitude" of customers, for this advantage clients will pay up to 3 times more than a drive-to location.
The MNR says it has a conflict of interest form that once filled out goes to the Deputy Minister to OK at their discretion even though the Act states a public lottery or public auction is the only way Ministry staff can get public lands or have an interest in them.
speed7 9/10/2012 12:03:28 PM ReportPublic landa is another whole ball of wax. I am referring to the workers at the ministry forestry research center. I have no knowledge of public lands but I do know that it is one very complex entity in itself. There are alot of negotiations with first nations so yeah , they have to get permission first before taking samples for research and sometimes that in itself can be a money drain because well... you know our natives expect something in return usually. That alone bleeds the NNR quite a bit and our government is at fault allowing this to happen.
Lovethenorth 9/10/2012 3:20:18 PM ReportI don't know how anyone can think MNR is bloated. MNR is a TINY Ministry. 20 years ago MNR was responsible for 50% fewer pieces of legislation and had 5000 employees. Now MNR has about 3200 employees and is has to administer twice as many pieces of legislation. More cuts to come. Don't blame your averge MNR employee for any of this. There are lazy store clerks, steelworkers, nurses, and teachers, too. MNR staff are just doing their job protecting Ontario's natural resources to the best of their abilities. They are no better or worse than any other group of employees. It's the premier's office that provides direction for legislation, enforcement, staffing, etc. Talk to Dalton McGuinty if you don't like the way things are going.
