Two new wildfires reported in the region

New fires

Two new fires have been confirmed thus far today in the Northeast Region.

Parry Sound 67 is a 0.2 hectare fire in the Smokey Lake area.

Initial attack came out of Sudbury to action the fire, and it is currently receiving suppression support.

Sudbury 193 is a 0.1 hectare fire currently receiving suppression support, and listed as not under control.

Existing fires

Five new fires were confirmed throughout the Northeast Region yesterday, September 4, all in the Wawa area.

Wawa 48 was a 0.1 hectare fire southwest of Hornepayne near Obakamiga Lake.

The fire is now out.

Wawa 49 is a 1.2 hectare fire near Cupa Lake, and is currently receiving suppression support and classed as being held.

Wawa 50 was a 0.3 hectare fire near Newcombe Lake.

The fire is now out.

Wawa 51 was a 0.1 hectare fire near Esnagi Lake which received suppression support out of Chapleau.

The fire is now out.

Wawa 52 is a 0.2 hectare fire east of Wabatongushi Lake that also received initial attack out of Chapleau.

The fire currently continues to receive suppression support and is listed as under control.

These fires are believed to be the result of recent lighting received in the area.

Nine fires remain classed as being observed in the Northeast Region, all in the Cochrane area.

These fires continue to be monitored, and are currently not receiving suppression action, due to agency resource management objectives.

Regional fire activity facts:

  • There are 18 active fires in the Northeast Region burning a total of 43,279.9 hectares.
  • To date, 879 fires in the Northeast Region have burned 52,981.8 hectares.

Fire hazard

As the hazard builds throughout the region, remember to take extreme care and caution when partaking in any outdoor activities.

A reminder that municipalities may have fire bans in place, so please ensure to check with them before doing any outdoor burning. 

Ontario Parks may also have their own restrictions in place for each campground.

To report a forest fire north of the French River, please call 310-FIRE (3473). 

In southern regions, forest fires can be reported by calling your local fire department.
