Fatal collision closes Hwy 17 near Sudbury (Saturday update)

Fatal collision - Highway 17
SUDBURY - On August 31, 2012 at 6:50 p.m. officers from the Sudbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a collision on Highway 17 East, City of Greater Sudbury.
Preliminary investigation reveals that a westbound pick-up truck struck a pedestrian who was walking westbound on the north shoulder of the highway.
The 20-year-old female pedestrian, Saoirse Sankey, from Vancouver, B.C. was pronounced dead at the scene.
The male driver and female passenger in the pick-up truck were not injured.
The investigation is continuing with the assistance of an OPP Collision Reconstructionist and an OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigator.
The highway was fully re-opened in both direction of travel shortly after midnight.

Hwy 17 is now open in both directions.

Hwy 17 has been opened to one lane.
One fatality has been reported.

A collision involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian has resulted in the closure of Hwy 17 east of Sudbury in Coniston.
The MTO is reporting at least one individual with serious injuries.
Traffic is halted in both directions.
A detour from Hwy 537 to Hwy 69 has been established.
