Join the Vulnerable Persons Registry: 100 days to 100+ registrants campaign during Celebrate 100!

Campaign will kick-off with on-site registration available to the public

The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) today announced that the organization, in partnership with the Office of the Mayor, will campaign to reach over 100 registrants in 100 days for the Vulnerable Persons Registry (VPR) during Celebrate 100!

While all Saultites become vulnerable in an emergency, some are at increased risk.

The ongoing success of the VPR depends on community awareness on how the registry may help a family member, friend or co-worker.

Beginning August 9th until November 16th, SSMIC and the Office of the Mayor are asking individuals and organizations in the community to join the VPR 100 Days to 100+ Registrants Campaign by reaching out through social media and promoting registration. Participating is easy — follow these steps in contributing to this important initiative:

  1. Follow @SOOVPR or @SaultMayor on Twitter. Use the hashtag #SOOVPR to help promote the registry and encourage registration by posting this link:https://www.soovpr.com/Register.aspx
  2. ‘Like’ facebook.com/VulnerablePersonsRegistry andfacebook.com/SaultMayor.  Spread the word by talking to one another.
  3. Mobilize your networks. If your social networking generates the most leads and registrations, we will formally recognize you as a community partner in this initiative.

Local to Sault Ste. Marie, the VPR is an internationally recognized, award-winning service that is free, voluntary and confidential. The VPR helps to better prepare emergency service groups by providing them with a registrant’s key information. In an emergency situation, including power outages, calls to 9-1-1 or evacuation, emergency service groups are better equipped to assist those individuals who are at greater risk.

How the VPR is helping registrants in Sault Ste. Marie:

  • When 9-1-1 is called to an apartment building because of a fire, the VPR alerts dispatchers that someone who uses a wheelchair lives on the 7th floor. Before arriving, firefighters are prepared to assist them in exiting the building.
  • If door-to-door evacuations are necessary, police are aware of who may need unique assistance, for example knowing someone  in the home is deaf and would be unable to hear them knocking on the door.
  • If someone relies on electricity for life-sustaining equipment such as oxygen, Canadian Red Cross or Sault Search and Rescue will contact this individual to learn if assistance is needed in a major power outage lasting 6 hours or more

The VPR can assist members of the community who live at home without 24-hour care who may have difficulty with mobility, vision, hearing, mental health etc., or  those living at home who rely on electricity for life-sustaining equipment like oxygen.

The VPR 100 Days to 100+ Registrants Campaign kicks-off with a two-day event with on-site registration available. Speak with the VPR Coordinator, Community Engagement Coordinator at the Office of the Mayor, and the VPR’s first registrant, Jean Wyatt. Local paramedics, city police, firefighters, Canadian Red Cross and the Community Emergency Management Coordinator will be on location to answer questions on emergency preparedness and how the VPR assists in emergency situations within the community.

Visit on Monday, August 13th at the Cambrian Mall (outside Sault Care Clinic) from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Tuesday, August 14th at the Station Mall (Sears Court) from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Other registration options are available, including registration locations, online application at soovpr.com, and mail.
