Swimming advisory for Havilland Beach

Algoma Public Health has issued a swimming advisory for Havilland Beach located on Havilland Shores Drive.

Algoma Public Health samples the local area beaches for E.coli weekly each summer.

These test results are subject to the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care bacteriological guidelines for safe swimming/bathing.

Swimming advisories are issued when these samples exceed the acceptable limits.

High levels of bacteria in the water may pose a risk to your health.

Ingesting beach water can expose humans to water borne diseases.

Other problems such as ear infections in smaller children are common with beach water exposure.

The Medical Officer of Health advises that it is unsafe for swimming at beaches with increased levels of bacteria.

When sample results return to safe parameters, the public will be notified.

Algoma Public Health would like to remind area residents to become educated swimmers/bathers.

Heavy rainfall, high winds, high numbers of swimmers, waterfowl and warm water temperatures can all increase the number of bacteria in beach water.

These factors can affect the water quality for up to 48 hours.

The extent of the contamination will be different at each beach.

Before swimming, take into consideration the past day’s weather and the current conditions of the beach.

The public is encouraged to visit the Beach Warnings section on Algoma Public Health’s website to view an interactive map of the beaches sampled and any current warnings or postings.

More beach information can be found on our Facebook page.
