ProtoLaunch finale and game demo open to the public
Watch as 24 students compete for scholarships and a chance to win a tour of Ubisoft Studios in Montreal
What
The ProtoLaunch summer competition Finale wraps up the work of 24 talented local students in an awards recognition and video game presentation.
ProtoLaunch is a unique three-year youth program made possible with funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
Local high school students participate in monthly workshops on making video games led by industry experts.
This year, speakers from Ubisoft, Digital Extremes, Gazillion Entertainment, Warner Bros Entertainment, and Behaviour Interactive travelled to Sault Ste. Marie and worked with local students.
At the end of each school year, students may earn a place in the five-week ProtoLaunch competition where they work in teams to create video games using the skills they learned throughout the year.
Participants in the summer competition are paid for their time as a summer job and all participants are expected to adhere to a standard work week.
Following this year's presentations, winners of the ProtoLaunch competition will be announced and all ProtoLaunch participants will receive formal recognition.
- All participants will receive a certificate of recognition.
- $13,000 in college or university scholarships will be awarded to those students recognized for outstanding accomplishments.
- A winning team will be selected to win all-expenses paid trip to Montreal to tour two major game studios, including Ubisoft, the largest video game studio in the world.
Who
On Saturday, August 4, the teams will make their final presentations on their original, fully-functioning video game demos.
Twenty-four local high school students are participating in the ProtoLaunch video game design competition, hosted by the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre at Algoma University.
The students are in six teams of four people.
The goal of each team is to conceptualize, design and build a video game by the end of the five-week long competition.
