Algoma Fall Festival season promotes 40 years of excellence
SAULT STE. MARIE - The Algoma Fall Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary by inviting back many artists who have played the festival in the past.
Billed as The Best of the Algoma Fall Festival, the 2012 season reads like a greatest hits release.
“When we looked back at the artists that could be invited for a return engagement the list was like a who’s who of Canadian talent,” says festival President Donna Hilsinger. “So trying to choose the very best from an exceedingly deep talent pool was a great challenge and this season really hits the mark.”
The 2012 Fall Festival will run from October 12 to November 3, showcasing a diverse array of talented, returning artists.
Opening for the festival this year is young Canadian jazz/pop star Nikki Yanofsky whose song I Believe was the theme for the Canadian 2010 winter Olympics.
The Canadian Tenors, rebranded as the Tenors, bring their powerhouse vocals and impressive classical/contemporary pop repertoire once more.
Also on tap this year are comedian Sandra Shamas, Lunch at Allen’s, jazz double bill Emilie-Claire Barlow and the Dave Young Quintet, Wingfield Lost and Found, and family entertainment Famous PEOPLE Players.
The Festival’s Celtic Colours in Algoma program continues this year after a fantastic showing last year, bringing an encore performance of the Beaton Sisters’ renowned East Coast fast-fiddle playing.
La Bottine Souriante, an 11-piece Juno award winning roots band, will tear up the stage with traditional Québécois music and dance, with a Celtic twist, on October 27.
New to the festival this year is CBC radio host and author Jian Ghomeshi, showcasing his new book 1982.
Additionally, the film West Wind: The Vision of Tom Thompson will be screened at the art gallery, followed by a discussion with the film’s producers Peter Raymont and Nancy Lang about the making of the film.
The Festival of Learning outreach and education program is partnering with the Stratford Shakespeare Festival to conduct student workshops based on Twelfth Night.
Also returning to the education program are the contemporary aboriginal dance group Kaha:wi Dance Theatre, and the outrageously funny children’s entertainer Norman Foote.
