Smoke alert

There are currently numerous fires actively burning in the Red Lake and Sioux Lookout Districts in the Northwest Region of Ontario, as well as large fires in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Current wind and weather conditions are causing smoke from these fires to drift into northeastern Ontario, including along highway 17 from Wawa to North Bay.

Smoke has also drifted into central Ontario, and has reached areas as far south as Parry Sound.

In many areas, the concentration of smoke will decrease due to daytime heating as the day progresses.

Smoky conditions are expected to persist depending on the wind and weather.

Reports continue to come in, and the MNR continues to keep a close eye on the situation.

Smoke issues from both new and existing fires will continue to be continuously monitored.

Any residents with concerns about the health effects of smoke can call TeleHealth Ontario at 1-866-797-2000.

In north-western Ontario, residents can call the Forest Fire Information Hotline at 1-888-258-8842 for regular updates.

Fire hazard

A Restricted Fire Zone Order previously in place for Northeastern Ontario has been replaced with a smaller Restricted Fire Zone Order of zones 21 and 22.

This adjusted order encompasses the general areas of Espanola, Sudbury, Manitoulin Island, North Bay and Temagami.

The previous order has been replaced because the fire hazard has lessened in some northern areas of the Northeast Region.

The Sudbury-Manitoulin and North Bay areas remain under a high to extreme fire hazard. New wildfires are likely to continue appearing until significant rainfall arrives.

A Restricted Fire Zone is also in effect for Algonquin Park.

In a Restricted Fire Zone, all burning permits are suspended and all open fires are prohibited.

Campfires may be allowed at some organized campgrounds or parks that use approved fire pits and meet certain other criteria.

Campers should check with the owners or operators first. Within the Restricted Fire Zone area, people can still use portable gas stoves for cooking and warmth but the public is asked to exercise extreme caution.

Ministry of Natural Resources fire staff and conservation officers will strictly enforce the restrictions on open burning.

Starting or tending a campfire in a Restricted Fire Zone can lead to a fine of up to $1,000.

For more information, please call the RFZ hotline at 1-866-357-8422, or visit here

A high to extreme hazard exists for Southern Ontario as well, including the areas of Pembroke, Haliburton and Bancroft.

Please take extra care and caution when working or traveling in any forested areas.

Please note many municipalities south of the Restricted Fire Zone have municipal fire bans in effect.

Even if you are not within the Restricted Fire Zone, please ensure to check with your local municipality for restrictions they have in place.

There are currently 43 active fires in the Northeast Region, burning 48,569.3 hectares.

To date, there have been 591 fires in the Northeast Region, having burnt 50,238.6 hectares.

To report a forest fire in the Northeast Region, please call 310-FIRE

In southern regions, forest fires can be reported by calling your local municipal fire department.

For up to date information on the current status of the Restricted Fire Zone, please call the Northeast Region Restricted Fire Information Hotline at 1-866-357-8422.
