New symbol for the Sault moving along

Tuesday, July 17, 2012   by: Jordan Allard

City council took the next step towards developing a coat of arms for our city at Monday's meeting when they approved a proposal that will seek the formation of a steering committee.

At a May 14 meeting, council approved proceeding to seek an officially accredited coat of arms for the city from Governor
General David Johnston.

The steering committee will work with his office through the Canadian Heraldic Authority to determine the wording that
will describe what the coat of arms will contain (the armorial bearings).

The wording will eventually become part of the letters patent documents which have been officially granted to the City.

City officials, meanwhile, don't want to stray too far away from our current emblem.

"As started previously, the intent is not to replace our current emblem with a completely new design, but to retain as much as possible while revising some elements so the emblem can officially be accredited as a coat of arms," states a report to council from Malcolm White, city clerk.

"The steering committee would develop draft wording for approval of the Chief Herald of Canada and city council."

Rachel Tyczinsi, deputy city clerk, was in Ottawa last week on vacation and was able to meet with a representative from the Canadian Heraldic Authority to review the remaining process to be followed.

Following approval of the coat of arms design, the steps necessary to develop an artistic rendering of the coat of arms would be undertaken.

Those steps will be subject to a further report to council.

Ward 2 Councillor Susan Myers has volunteered and will lead the steering committee as she is familiar with the process from her work on the previous coat of arms committee in 2007 and from involvement as co-chair of the Celebrate 100! Management Committee.

Myers' ward-mate, Terry Sheehan, has also agreed to be involved.

The rest of the committee would consist as staff from the clerk's department and one or two additional members from the
historical/heritage community.

The orioginal coat of arms (symbol) was introduced when Sault Ste. Marie was incorporated as a city in 1912. It has served us well for 100 years now!! Why change something that isn't broke? We are celebrating 100 years of incorporation this year and this coat of arms should be registered this year as part of the celebration.

Instead of worrying about a lousy crest. Why not talk to Johnston and better yet Hayes about getting some larger corporations to set up shop here in the sault. Somehow a coat of arms is'nt all that important compared to ensuring that the people of sault ste marie are working with stable jobs so they can pay city taxes. You guys need to focus on what's priority.... not the silly putty stuff! What the heck do we pay taxes for. I would like to know how much this is going to cost us tax payers? I would'nt be all that proud of this new crest especially since people are not working or will be laid off permanently soon!

Absolutely ridiculous to change the Coat of Arms and spend tax dollars to do so . Wake up City Council. Look around or better yet ask around. I don't think this is on the peoples minds. Employment, health care, schools, crime, coat of arms , duh !
Well I guess we know where their heads are at !

Thanks AED
People have cancer and there is only ONE Doctor handling the workload... ONE!
I would like to know who is making this crest and if the elite club is involved why must us poor tax payers foot the bill for something stupid in comparison to healthcare, jobs, and the stability of this city! I beleive the smoke and mirrors theory is right. Does anyone in city council care? NO. Its all about that big pension at the end of the rainbow and I have to keep voting for moron's who dont get this city kick started and advance this community further. I know we can do better than this , and we just keep sitting on our laurels doing nothing about it. Very disgusting. Not proud of Sault Ste Marie and the city . Same shit different day! Just a bunch of Ego`s blowing our hard earned money.

hmm you've got to wonder at the actual cost of this committee even in just man hours and resources..... wasted tome and real eye opener on where the city`s priorities are
speed7 7/17/2012 11:51:12 AM Report

Also in reguards to the casino. The workers I am sure are very nervous right now as any, and all information is, up in the air. I think you are right, the EDC will do nothing. It will be bought for profit sharing and once the governement is satisfied feeding at the trough so the corprate leaders can continue to have a job , then the axe will come down and bye bye casino. Stalling tactic for what is to come later. This kind of dishonesty is absolutely sickening. Playing with peoples livelyhood. The EDC brought casino up here and now they are all closing... Nice! What`s next . Scared to ask.
speed7 7/17/2012 12:00:07 PM Report

Sorry I meant to say he EDC brought the Infamous Call Centres up here so it would broaden our peoples computer skills and now they are all closing. What did Call Centres ever do but make people deaf, sick and stressed out. This is what the private sector does. Very litle protection for the worker and all the profits for the corporation for which the goverment gives huge tax breaks to. They never stick around for long. The EDC knew that, yet they still went for it. Like I am supposed to trust the Elite Dining Club to make descisions about our casino or the city for that matter at all!!!!
AceOfBass 7/17/2012 12:16:50 PM Report

What is the big deal with the City's crest?

Councillors Sheehan and Myers need to start looking after Ward 2. Ward 2 lacks real representation and these two need to be replaced.
Ward 2 needs elect responsible people who are there to look after their needs not two Councillors who are just out for themselves. These two Councillors have voted to raise property taxes the last few years. One Councillor from Ward 2 manages to be out of town on budget night on a few occasions.
Does ward 2 want to see their property taxes keep going up every year? These are the two who voted to give a million dollars to AU and a Million dollars to Sault College which caused property taxes to go up.
A vote for these two is to keep your property taxes to go up almost 30 % in the past 10 years

dadal 7/17/2012 1:03:05 PM Report

Only one of the major call centers actually closed, only because it was taken over by a European based company that moved operations. The other two biggies are fine and here to stay.

I agree we need more industry but with our dollar strong we won't attract too many. And retail while does offer jobs is only as good as the total number of people working.

But I DO agree we can spend money on more important things than a coat of arms. Heck why not make it a contest for local schools to do. Would be cheaper and probably a better design.
thumbs4208 7/17/2012 3:24:46 PM Report

Soo today there is concern that the City is waisting money and time on this. Will you post this on the home page ??
speed7 7/17/2012 11:50:12 PM Report

The call center on queen street did close too? It was a larger call center along with Transcomm. My point was that call centers in general dont stick around very long. Its not exactly a sustainable job. More like a fly by night job for the short term and the Sault deserved better. Not against any kind of employment but for me it and for most of my co workers at the call center when I worked there, were very unhappy bieng treated like dogs... do the job or you are fired mentality. Maybe the other 2 call centers remaining are different? Still , it is only a matter of time before they sell out to another country because its cheaper to operate in the phillipines or china and pay less than minimum wage and our goverment gives the big tax break and lets them virtually get away with it. That was my point.
