Bridge lighting ceremonies (video)

Friday, June 29, 2012   by: SooToday.com Staff

For all those who wondered what all that noise was about last night, here's a picture of what you missed.

The 50th anniversary of the international bridge that connects the twin Soo's was celebrated in blazing style last night.

This photograph is courtesy of loyal reader Bill Moss.

Below is SooToday.com video footage from our own Adam Gualtieri.

Gualtieri is new to SooToday.com and we think he's going to go far in the video world.

We're glad to have his with us for as long as we can keep him.

You'll be disappointed if you miss even one of his videos.

Don't miss this Saturday's 50th Anniversary Bridge Walk either.

Loads of fun stuff will be going on to celebrate this milestone in twin Soo relations, not the least of which will be a bike decorating contest.

I am wondering why I did not see any news report that these fireworks would be held last night. I saw them over the horizon when it was too late to go down to the river to watch. It seems odd that Sootoday did not include this news event yesterday in the local news section during the day so that the many people who were unaware or had forgotten about earlier announcements of this event could have enjoyed it as well. It is not good enough to rely on local citizens to report the news after the fact. The Sault Star did not report it either. The Bridge authority could also have better hyped such a momentous occasion. Has local media totally lost touch with local happenings? Coverage has been quite lame lately. It should be the duty of local media to use its media power to help rally local citizens to come out and support these great events to better our community.

Funny...it's been all over the news and radio. You may need to diversify where you get local information from time to time.

Also, if you look above the comments, you can see that Sootoday provided coverage of the festivities leading up to the event.

They should have had it tonight and actually make it a night out for people but that's the Soo for you, scared of making money.

Tugboats are tonight - I'm thinking that may be why they didn't do it tonight? Mind you its just the parade at 6, I think everything would have been able to be squeezed in.

Really? You like this video work? Does every shot have to zoom out? And what's with the elevator music?

Nice pic!

To opinionated- Am sure I read that tugboat races this year are tomorrow Saturday- parade first at 12 then the races. Change is good?

Stevie, don't know what where you get your local info from but this event was not posted on Sootoday, Local2 or the Sault Star. How much more diverse can you get other than getting the news from outside the Sault. The only reason I knew about it was because of a sign posted on the bridge when I came back last weekend. So I checked the bridge website and it was on there. This city has a very good record of posting events after the fact and that is for a fact. The local radio stations are a joke with information.

Maybe in the next 50 years they will light the canadian brige up properly. Red white red not white red white. I think they need to look a flag once in awhile. Brutal!
obetpinoy 6/29/2012 11:28:37 PM Report

It's too bad that some of the red lights on the Canadian side of the bridge are burnt out already :(
