Batchewana First Nation Celebrates National Aboriginal Day

(BATCHEWANA FIRST NATION) - Batchewana First Nation (BFN) Chief and Council would like to invite everyone to celebration National Aboriginal Day 2012 at Whitefish Island (Soo Locks), tomorrow June 21, 2012.

National Aboriginal Day is a time we gather to celebrate our culture, language, ceremonies and all of the components that make us Anishnabek.

This is also a time we take to educate in a positive way the many obstacles we have overcome to rebuild our Nation and move forward toward a successful future.

This year’s National Aboriginal Day is themed, “Racism Hurts Everyone” which coincides with the launch of BFN’s anti-racism campaign that will be taking place over the summer months. T-shirts promoting the topic complete with the Anishinaabe 7 Grandfather Teaching will be sold for $1.00.

The celebration will begin with a fire and ceremony at 8 a.m.

The Chief Sayers will lead the political discussion commencing at 10 a.m.

Discussions will continue with local community members who will provide motivational speeches to promote the anti-racism campaign.

Community/kids activities begin at 5 p.m. and will in include moccasin games, face painting, a tour of Whitefish Island, 3-legged race, mini canoe making and much more.

The Mini Pow-Wow Grand Entry will start at 7 p.m., and will showcase traditional native regalia, dance styles and the Ojibway language. Food vendors will be on site selling hot food and cold beverages.

Native musicians, dancers and drummers will provide live entertainment starting at 5 p.m.

Spectators are asked to bring their own chairs, as seating is limited.

Bringing this special day to close will be an amazing fireworks show that is sure to please everyone starting at dusk.

Please bring your own blankets, chairs, bug spray.

This is a traditional event, absolutely no drugs or alcohol permitted

Proudly sponsored by the Batchewana First Nation.

Happy National Aboriginal Day to all of our First Nation Brothers and sisters

Why would there be any negative comments from us Sault folks. It is a positive celebration that does not effect us negatively in any way.
The celebration has the added feature of teaching people not to be racists against each other. I imagine that would include racism of whites against natives, natives against whites , natives against Metis etc etc etc.
