Forest fire situation update

Northeast Region June 11, 2012 (15:30)

Over the course of the past weekend, crews in the Northeast responded to four new fires, as well as continued efforts on existing fires.

The new fires occurred in the areas of Cochrane (COC 24 at 0.1 has), Hearst (HEA 12 at 0.1 has), Kirkland Lake (KLK 17 at 0.1 has) and Sudbury (SUD 57 at 1.0 has).

These fires have all since been put out, with the exception of SUD 57 which is listed as Under Control with no problems anticipated.

Thus far today, there have been four new fires in the Northeast Region, including one in Cochrane, two in Kirkland Lake as well as one in Timmins.

Suppression efforts continue on existing fires. Timmins 9 continues to be scanned using an infrared unit.

This aids in finding hotspots that exist on the fire, and ground crews as well as helicopters and buckets continue to work on these hot spots.

Progress continues to be made on the Kirkland Lake complex (KLK 8, KLK 13), and both fires are listed as Under Control.

Even though humidity is high, (which can typically lower possibility of new fire starts), the fire hazard remains extreme in many areas as we are currently experiencing strong wind gusts that lower the effect of the high humidity.

There are currently 14 active fires in the Northeast Region, burning a total of 47435.9 hectares.

To date, there have been 277 fires in the Northeast Region, burning a total of 48387.6 hectares.

The Ministry of Natural Resources wishes to advise the public that a Restricted Fire Zone previously in place for the Northeast Region is now lifted.

Campfires are now allowed for cooking and warmth, but must be tended to at all times.

Keep your campfires small and make sure they are completely extinguished before leaving.

Remember to avoid burning in windy conditions, as fire can quickly spread.

The public is reminded to take extreme caution, as a high hazard still remains specifically in the areas of Sault Ste Marie, Sudbury, North Bay and south of the French River.

The MNR would like to thank the public for their cooperation during this period of escalated fire activity, and a reminder to check with your local municipality for fire bans they may have in place.

For up to date information on the current status of the Restricted Fire Zone, please call the Northeast Region Restricted Fire Information Hotline at 1-866-357-8422.
