TOWER INN AND SUITES

How many gallons of paint to cover the Second Line water tower?

The Sault’s landmark water tower on Second Line, shiny, proud and almost newly painted, will grace the busiest corner in the city with a pristine white demeanour by early next week, weather permitting.

Jerry Mageau, who supervised the transformation, works for JDCMI, a Cambridge-based company that specializes in industrial coatings.

Jerry’s been in the business 42 years, and says the Sault’s tower is a “baby” at 100 feet high, compared to the many 160-foot water towers he’s dealt with.

According to the recent retiree, who still works occasionally, the elevated reservoir was last painted in 1985.

Asked how much sandblasting was required, the foreman says “none”.

What appeared to be rust was actually the work of airborne grime.

Only power washing was required…hot, hot water and plenty of pressure.

Built in 1969, the old city tower has been the property of Algoma’s Water Tower Inn and Suites since 2003.

Proprietor Jim Hilsinger thought the year of the city’s centennial was a good time for the spruce-up project.

The Inn has decided to celebrate the final touches to the tower with a contest.

Participants need to answer the question: “How many gallons of paint did it take to paint the water tower?”

Now, only Jerry Mageau truly knows the answer, since he still has all the empty cans on hand.

No fair googling him though; he’s been sworn to secrecy.

Sign in for the contest at www.watertowerinn.com and click on “Paint the Tower Contest”.

The prize is a package of goodies worth over $500 that includes, among other items, a $250 Inn gift card, two Algoma Fall Festival tickets and an Inn-branded blanket and bathrobe.
