NEWS RELEASE

MINISTRY OF
NATURAL RESOURCES

******************************
Thus far today, there have not been any new fires in the Northeast Region.

Suppression efforts continue and good progress is being made on all existing fires.

Timmins 9 and Wawa 4 are classified as being held, meaning that with currently committed resources, sufficient suppression action has been taken that the fire is not likely to spread beyond existing or predetermined boundaries under prevailing and forecasted conditions.

Hotspots are being worked by fire ranger crews.

The Kirkland Lake Complex, Kirkland Lake 8 (2,326 hectares) and 13 (696 hectares), are listed as under control.

Fire ranger crews assigned to the complex continue working on hotspots.

Equipment, personnel, and resources continue to be demobilized from these fires to be retrieved for future use.

Timmins restrictions

The implementation order is still in place on a large tract of land west of Highway 144 and south of Highway 101.

While people have been allowed to return to certain areas, residents are reminded to respect the fire area and that general access to these areas remains restricted as fire suppression efforts continue.

Please note - As it applies to Highway 101, access remains restricted to Kenogaming Road and Pharand Lake Road. As it applies to Highway 144, access remains restricted to Crothers Road and the Gogama Unit Road as well as a host of other clearly marked roads in keeping with this order.

Notice to campers in the Murr, Pharand and Hazen Lake area

Please be advised that people who own trailers, campers, boats and other equipment in the Murr, Pharand, and Hazen Lake areas (including the public access points) will be allowed access for removal of property tonight, June 6, 2012 between the hours of 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Since this area continues to be within the Implementation Order, individuals will be escorted in and out of the area with Ministry of Natural Resources staff.

Idividuals are asked to check in with Ministry officials stationed at either Hwy 101 and Pharand Road or Highway 144 and Tatachikapika Lake Road beginning at 4 p.m. and on the hour (5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 7 p.m.).

Under no circumstances are individuals to proceed into these areas without MNR authorization.

There are currently 10 active fires in the Northeast Region with 48,127.1 hectares burned to date.

Fire hazard

The Ministry of Natural Resources wishes to advise the public that a Restricted Fire Zone previously in place for the Northeast Region is now lifted.

Campfires are now allowed for cooking and warmth, but must be tended to at all times.

Keep your campfires small and make sure they are completely extinguished before leaving.

Remember to avoid burning in windy conditions, as fire can quickly spread.

The public is reminded to take extreme caution, as a high hazard still remains specifically in the areas of Sault Ste Marie, Sudbury, North Bay and south of the French River.

The MNR would like to thank the public for their cooperation during this period of escalated fire activity, and a reminder to check with your local municipality for fire bans they may have in place.

For up to date information on the current status of the Restricted Fire Zone, please call the Northeast Region Restricted Fire Information Hotline at 1-866-357-8422.
