Seen last Thursday on Drake Street (10 photos)

Wednesday, June 06, 2012   by: SooToday.com Staff

SooToday.com received the following information and accompanying photos from faithful reader Stephanie Deboer about a community project that took place on Drake Street this past Thursday.

*****************************
It was a breath of fresh air seeing the efforts and enthusiasm from all “the friends of Drake St Park,” including children, adults and canine, in helping to rebuild the forested islands at a local East End neighbourhood park last Thursday evening (May 31).

It was a joint effort between the Drake St. area residents, the City of Sault Ste. Marie councillors and staff, and Clean North.

Approximately 25 people joined forces and helped to plant the trees that were donated by Don McGorman and Clean North in Sault Ste. Marie.

Earlier in the spring, residents from the Drake St. area came together expressing concern about the health and well-being of the forested areas at the Drake St. Park.

Many recognized the need for park restoration which would involve maintaining the forested areas and the planting of new trees.

With the assistance and support from folks from the City of Sault Ste. Marie and Clean North, a plan was put into action.

The many neighbourhood families, councillors and staff from the City of SSM, Clean North and students from Sault College who participated in the tree planting that evening, showed real commitment to helping to improve and maintain our local green spaces for future generations.

Many thanks to Stephen Harvey for all his efforts in organizing this event for the neighbourhood and Don McGorman of Clean North for all his time and effort into this cause.

Thanks to councillors, Paul Christian and Steve Butland, as well as Travis Reid at the City of Sault Ste. Marie who helped make this possible.

And in six months, when they issue a permit for 'leventy seven new rowhouse units on that very site that you helped clean up so it was more saleable, how are you gonna feel then???

Good to see some community spirit!

Rowhouses? This is Drake St. Too much money in that area for that type of thing. Never get zoned.

To the people who worked on Drake Street Park.......many, many, many kudos to you!! Hopefully your community pride will spread to other neighbourhoods!!!

Just Curious:

I am "just curious" about how you get through life with such a negative attitude? Why don't you get "curious" about your city and get out there and do some good works too?......Just sayin'.
