Batchewana chief meets with Prince of Wales

BATCHEWANA FIRST NATION – Chief Dean Sayers of Batchewana First Nation (BFN) [was scheduled to] meet today (May 22, 2012) with his Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, Crown representatives, and First Nation Leaders from across Canada in a historic meeting to address outstanding treaty issues.

Chief Dean Sayers [was to] represent the 21 First Nations that are signatories to the Robinson Huron Treaty of 1850 in a meeting with 19 other First Nations Leaders from across Canada and His Royal Highness at 3:30 p.m. today.

Chief Dean Sayers had this to say:“I’m humbled to attend this historic meeting regarding our sacred Treaty of 1850. Historically the British agreed to an Indigenous territory, independent republic and support for Indigenous development, this meeting is a great opportunity to remind the Crown of these commitments.”

Chief Dean Sayers was asked by Robinson Huron Chief’s to attend the meeting and convey their message that continual meetings between First Nations and Royal Delegates are imperative.

Chief Dean Sayers [attended] with specific priorities from the Batchewana Council to garner a commitment to follow up on Treaty issues by His Royal Highness, and leave a lasting impression.

On behalf of BFN Chief Sayers [was to present] The Prince of Wales with a miniature Birch Bark Canoe symbolic of the Treaty relationship between First Nations and the Crown.

The private meeting [was]primary on the agenda secondary is the Military Muster event.

Chief Sayers will attend as a direct descendant of 1812 War chiefs who had an alliance agreement with the Crown and participate in a parade to Fort York Armoury.
