Young woman injured at fair (Updated)

Friday, May 18, 2012   by: Staff

9 p.m. update

Unconfirmed reports indicate that a young woman was seriously injured at the Campbell Amusements midway and fair in Sault Ste. Marie  yesterday evening.

Witnesses report she was hurt when a piece of the Zipper dislodged and hit her head.

Her injuries are said to have included an open wound to the head, concussion and skull fracture.

Original story 5 p.m.
Sault Ste. Marie City Police today confirmed that a young woman standing near a ride at Campbell Amusements Ltd. midway and fair was injured.

The woman was watching the Zipper near the end of the evening when a piece of the ride dislodged, striking her in the head, reported witnesses at the scene.

Police say officers were on the scene to perform usual duties at the fair.

The officers responded to the incident to protect public safety but there is no intent to pursue a criminal investigation.

Loyal reader, Randy Schuran sent us his account of the event and the photo shown.

"While I was standing in front of the Zipper watching my 14 year son on the ride, a plate of metal came detached from the ride striking a young lady, who was also watching the ride in the head.

"She had a nasty gash on her head, (never seen blood pour out like that).

"Police were quick to arrive on the scene to close down the ride.

We stayed with the young girl until she was rushed to the hospital by ambulance."

That is why I would never ever ride on those pile of junk rides that are put together by by who knows who and on who knows what.
I hope she sues their asses.

i have heard of so many getting hurt on the zipper-like the time three bikers flew from the zipper cage in the 80's.i think its time to retire that ol machine -at least from the soo-it never did much good here-not the workers fault..boa been operateing the zipper for years-hes a good operator just equipment gets old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
otisbluesstreet 5/18/2012 6:19:39 PM Report

I feel bad for the individual involved and those indirectly involved who had to witness this incident. However there are two sides to it, one it is somewhat unatural to place your self into a large metal structure just to have it spin you around in the air at high speeds, risks are obviously known, but on the other hand you are more likely to be injured on your way to work than at a theme park.

A piece of the ride me that says that it wasn't put together and inspected properly. Are the people who put these rides together going to be held accountable?
Nanax5 5/18/2012 6:54:19 PM Report

I hope they sue their pants off. Was there a sign saying stay away at this point

to walk around n check out where you can spend some of your babysitting money on and to get hit by a flying object is the Question to be Answered she did get hurt Zipper 30+ yrs old
Jessikaa 5/18/2012 8:20:06 PM Report

this was my little sister!, she got a fractured skull, open wound concussion!, I totally agree, they should shut it down even though it is a fun ride but it is unsafe, they should of made sure it was properly assembled, what if it was a younger child who got hurt?! like seriously..
ajiakitty 5/18/2012 8:46:30 PM Report

Oh, my gosh Jessica. So sorry about your sister, its horrible! When I read about this it really scared me because your sister or anybody who happened to be standing nearby could have been killed. Obviously, they should be held accountable since setting up the rides and making money should never ever come before public safety.
libster 5/18/2012 11:32:34 PM Report

It is so sad that someone was hurt. I hope she is going to recover. Not to be uncaring but our city has had many chances to pass family amusement based main-stays ie-(water-parks/amusement parks)... they have veto'd them all. Thus Sault Ste Marie has to be at the mercy of an annual May long week-end cash grab!
OceanGirl 5/18/2012 11:39:25 PM Report

woooow, my grandaughter was there!!! poor girl hope shes okaay,!!!!
speed7 5/19/2012 12:20:44 AM Report

Poor girl. Skull fracture doesnt sound very good. She is going to feel that for a long time. Sometimes it could mean surgery later on as the cerebral spinal fluid can leak out into the sinses. I hope everything is ok and they did all the proper ct scans or mri tests on her?
I dont like that zipper ride and personally never tried it. Heard too many horror stories so I chose not to take that ride as a kid. I hope she recovers fine and best wishes to her.
hitch 5/19/2012 3:35:44 AM Report

I hope the rides are shut down?
thegarbage 5/19/2012 6:50:52 AM Report

Get yourself a good lawyer. Your gettin paid.
ang24 5/19/2012 7:18:27 AM Report

Actually it was a man named Brian Pitts who flew off, not three bikers. He was in a body cast and coma for long, long time. They usually have a write up bout it in the paper every year. sadly he passed away a few years ago. IT WAS A MIRACLE HE LIVED TO TELL THE STORY! just want to say hope you feel better to the lady that was hurt.
SandyB 5/19/2012 7:39:42 AM Report

Really this has nothing to do with the city.

Amusement 'devices' are licensed under the TSSA.. the Technical Standards & Safety Authority.

if you go to, there is a tab that says 'Report an incident'

I certainly hope someone has..

hotsweetpea 5/19/2012 8:18:52 AM Report

not to stand up for the carnies or anything but there is standards they follow as well as inspectors that come in to ok the rides b4 anyone rides them so it was just an accident!
GrammaDingbat54 5/19/2012 9:01:57 AM Report

So sorry to hear of the girl's injuries!! Speedy recovery wishes to her.

Is rain in the forecast this week? Every year Campbell Amusements arrive in town means it's going to rain. Haven't gone there in years.
GotRotties 5/19/2012 10:05:36 AM Report

Oddly enough I was passing by early in the morning and they were just starting to set up and thought " I wonder how they get people to put those rides together properly especially when they are transient"...and I happened to know a fellow that flew out of the ride years was Brian Pitts, he never really recovered...hurt his back quite severely..used a cane the rest of his life. That same year 2 of my friends and I were on the ride and I was right at the door...all their weight was on me when we were upside down and I looked at the latch and all they had holding the door shut was a very large nail on a chain...I never went on that ride again...then I heard that Brian had fallen out that same year...I believe it was the 70's.
GotRotties 5/19/2012 10:08:17 AM Report

thats right Ang..I think they thought he was a biker because he did receive a settlement and bought a Harley with it...but thats a big price to pay for a lifetime of pain.
dob131 5/19/2012 10:08:37 AM Report

I cannot beleive that the police didn't shut done the entire fair for an investigation. The police will be questioned for that, how were they to know forsure that the piece of metal came from that particular ride, maybe it came from another ride, or someone hitting her from behind who, knows forsure until a full investigation was done.
Eduardo 5/19/2012 11:16:00 AM Report

sounds like a freak accident to me, still they have to retire or give the entire thing a complete overhaul tightening every nut and bolt, things get old and break people, and this was a freak accident, maybe they should atleast have the sides cordoned off cause if debris does fly off it would be towards the side, obviously a huge settlement will be offered, it sucks that little girl had to get hurt, i really do wish the best for her, i was always worried to work on a plane cause i know equipment gets old and breaks and that happening on a plane scares the hell outta me, sure they perform regular maintenance but how do you know when something is gonna break, i'll shut up now
speed7 5/20/2012 12:39:16 AM Report

That was'nt an accident it was irresponsible. Since some of you find it amusing that this girl who cracked her skull is going to sue and get rich. Remember your skull protects your brain and when the brain bangs against your skull your brain can become injured too and it can swell up. Things can happen and go wrong. Not to mention what long term effects it may have. If I had a choice between cashing in on a settlement or go back in time and reverse the incident competely? I would pick option 2 ... Any day no problem.
duck hunter 5/20/2012 1:40:57 AM Report

To those of you who know really know nothing about the amusement industry.

Especially you really know nothing about Campbell Amusements' the Campbells have given to numerous charitable organizations from Sault Ste Marie to Charlottetown P.E.I

As far as a cash grab goes Campbell Amusements supports alot of businesses while they are here. All those rides run off of genarated power not city power. They rent motel rooms, buy supplies and of course everyone must eat.

The Campbells also hire local people while they are here. Maybe those of you who think they just grab money should ask the PEEWEE arena if they mind Campbell Amusements coming every spring.

Thank you duck hunter, I couldn't agree with you more. I feel bad for the girl that was hurt and hope she is better. I must comment though, people are posting stuff they know nothing about. Carnies are not dumb people that can't manage to bath. Working at a carnival means 12-20 hour days or more some times, being polite to people who talk to you like you're dirt which also means they have alot of patience. Looking at the comments on here, some could better spend their time going back to school. It takes a special kind of person to work at a fair and I applaud each and every one of them. Thank you for putting up with some of the rude people in our city who have nothing better to do than criticize others when they should be looking in the mirror before they judge.
BabyBella 5/19/2014 8:19:41 PM Report

The men from the fair brought broken ride pieces to a local business to be fixed. the business was unable to fix them all and they are still running the rides!!!!!! DANGEROUS
