Algoma Sailing Club celebrates 46th annual spring launch

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON (May 15, 2012) - Saturday, May 12, 2012,marked the start of the 46th official sailing season for members of the Algoma Sailing Club with the launch of some 30 boats.

This year’s racing season begins with the commencement of the Spring River Race Series on Wednesday, May 23.

“As a community based and volunteer run organization we continue to welcome both sailors who may be without a boat and folks who are interested in trying their hand at sailing to join us as crew,”said Brian Christie, this year's commodore.

This year club members and associates will be showing their support for the 2012 North American Safe Boating Awareness Week program “Ready, Set, Wear It Campaign.

Safe Boating Week runs from May 19 to the 25.

“The Ready, Set, Wear It Campaign focuses on encouraging boaters to wear a personal flotation device (PFD) whenever they are on the water,” said Mr. Christie.

“Often, boaters will proudly tell boating safety officials that they always have their lifejackets on their boat, just like the law demands,” adds Mr. Christie. “But remember that a lifejacket isn’t intended to save the life of the boat. It’s meant to save the life of the human being on the boat! So if you fall in the water without your lifejacket on, that fine sense of pride in having lifejackets on board won’t help keep you afloat.”

“Sometimes traditional styles of PFDs can feel awkward and bulky. But current models of manual and automatic inflatable PFDs are compact, light weight, and comfortable,” said Christie. “Regardless, there really is no excuse.”

The Algoma Sailing Club members and the Canadian Safe Boating Council urges that when you go boating this season, don’t just carry your lifejacket on board your boat, Wear It!
