Children to explore the outdoors at Nature Camp

SAULT STE. MARIE - Looking for a fun, interactive, educational camp to send your children to this summer?

Sault College is now accepting applications for The Nature Camp for Kids.

This program operated by the College, provides children ages 4-8 years with experiences and educational opportunities that will stimulate their sense of wonder in the natural world.

The camp is a seven week program from July 2 until August 17, 2012 operated by Nancy Leindecker, manager of the Sault College Child Development Centre along with several C.P.R. and first-aid trained staff.

The Nature Camp will be held at the Sault College Child Development Centre.

“The camp provides children with a group learning experience through the development of activities that allow for optimal participation and learning,” says Nancy Leindecker, manager of The Nature Camp for Kids.

“The Nature Camp is a great way for children to explore the outdoors and enjoy the natural surroundings,” Quotes Leindecker.

The camp will incorporate daily concepts that will be explored through outdoor activities that focus on natural environment.

For example, what happens to dirty water when you pour it through sand, how birds make nests, and many more interesting and fun learning experiments.

Each week will be based on a theme which will connect children to nature through learning and experiencing the natural outdoors.

Claire Warden, educational consultant, was a guest at the Inspire Conference that happened last week hosted by The Algoma Child Care Supervisors Committee (ACCSC).

Claire’s presentation focused on inspiring parents to get outside with their children and explore the challenges and rewards the outdoors can bring.

Claire quotes: “Trees can be climbed and hidden behind; they can become forts or bases; with their surrounding vegetation and roots, they become dens and little houses; they provide shelter, landmarks and privacy; fallen, they become part of an obstacle course or material for den-building; near them you find birds, little animals, conkers [acorns], fallen leaves, mud, fir cones and winged seeds; they provide a suitable backdrop for every conceivable game of the imagination.”

The Nature Camp for Kids will be held at the Sault College Child Development Centre at 550 Northern Avenue (Prince Charles Public School) in Sault Ste. Marie.

The camp will be held for seven weeks, beginning on July 2, 2012 and ending on August 17, 2012.

Hours are 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. and the cost is $160 per week.
