This is a follow-up/add-on the the previous story - Former Saultite criticizes changes at Group Health Centre - Monday 4/23/2012.

Not only did they raise the parking from $3 to $5 and also increased the meter parking, they cancelled the STOP program and they also closed the Eye & Vision Department as of March 30.

Current patients had NO warning of such changes.

As a patient of the Group Health Centre I just received a letter in the mail today.

Quote:

To Our Valued Patients:

Dr. Karen Hyyrylainen and Dr. Mark Robertson wish to inform our patients that, as of Friday March 30th, 2012, the Vision and Eye Care Department (Optometry and optical dispensary) at the Group Health Centre is officially closed.

Unfortunately, the speed of the decision to close the Vision and Eye Care Department has left us unable to properly transition patients into our new practice without a gap in care.

We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause.

Patients can be reassured that their records are accessible at the Group Health Centre by calling 705-759-5561 until such time as the records can be transferred to our new practice.

Patients with scheduled appointments will be contacted by Group Health staff and advised how to proceed.

Patients with urgent eye problems can contact Dr. Mitchell (Ophthalmologist) at the Group Health Centre using the same 705-759-5561 number.

Non-urgent problems can be handled by contacting one of the other local optometrists.

Our new practice will be known as Northern Vision Care and is located at 671A Great Northern Road (Sar-Gin Centre just north of the Fairfield Inn).

We anticipate opening in October 2012 and will inform you when you can begin to schedule appointments at 705-254-6262.

We look forward to welcoming you to our new office.

Sincerely,

Karen Hyyrylainen OD and Mark Robertson OD

End quote

The Group Health Centre asks for support in many different ways yet they don't care about their patients.

With the above-noted quote, patients have to wait over 7+ months for a new Eye and Vision Clinic.

I'm sure these decisions weren't made overnight and management should of made the announcement months in advance but NOT let the patients hang and wait with nothing to replace it with.

I'm sure they could of continued services without interruptions until the replace clinic was completed ...

We just lost 1 urologist to retirement.

We are currently losing Dr. Mukherjee, cardiologist (he is moving out of town) as of the end of this month.

I'm surprised that these 2 optometrists stayed after the way that they have been treated.

In closing, the Group Health Centre once was a good addition to the Soo community, now its nothing more than a financial drain on the Ontario Health System; it's all about money and not the patient.

Thanks for taking time to read.
