LSSU presence at magazine Glamour to double in size this summer

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI – Lake Superior State University student Meaghan Parker figured her internship at Glamour magazine in New York City was way too much fun to keep to herself.

So she has recruited two fellow LSSU business students to follow in her footsteps this summer.

Ciara Johnson and Helena Wollan — both finishing up their freshman year — start work the end of May as accessory interns in the magazine's fashion department.

They will be responsible for checking in and labeling accessory shipments for photo shoots.

This includes going on runs all over New York to pick up samples from designer studios, stores, and corporate or public relations offices.

"Getting the opportunity to work for Glamour magazine and the amazing editors I got to work under was a chance of a lifetime," says Parker. "The internship changed my whole career path."

Chances are good that it will change Johnson and Wollan's, too.

Johnson, a business administration-entrepreneurship major, wants to launch her small jewelry business into a world-known brand.

"I don't just love fashion because I'm a girl and I'm supposed to," she says. "I love the creative aspect of it. I grew up surrounded by creativity and being encouraged to create and design. It's so fun to take a piece of clothing that someone would overlook as 'ugly' or too eccentric, and make it a masterpiece."

Johnson mentions that she hasn't been to New York since the sixth grade, an age far too young to appreciate it.

"It's not like a week-long trip with your family. Helena and I will have the most incredible experience in the world, surrounded by all different types of people and styles as well as cultural experiences," she says. "We are going to be working in New York City for almost three months!"

Johnson plans to blog the entire experience; run a web search on "Ciara Aisling blogspot" to follow it.

Johnson's cohort, Helena Wollan, a business administration/marketing major, also sees fashion marketing in her future, along with hopes for a career in acting.

"New York is a great city for both of those things," says Wollan. "I'm hoping that by being here I can break into the fashion industry and get my foot through the door into other opportunities that may arise."

This past semester, Wollan was supporting actress for an LSSU Theatre Company stage production.

"My strengths are multitasking, working hard, being up for anything, determination; being open-minded, creative, artsy, and motivated," she says. "If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere."

Not to get Johnson and Wollan's hopes up too much, but as if meeting Jennifer Aniston, Alicia Keys, and Demi Moore, weren't cool enough for Parker, Glamour fashion editors decided to feature her in the magazine's "Dress Your Body" section.

Photographers took before and after pictures of a makeover Parker had for the article.

Parker, Aniston, Keys, and Moore all appear in the October 2011 issue.

Parker plans to launch her marketing career in Italy after graduating at LSSU's spring commencement. Johnson's hometown is Peachtree City, GA, while Wollan is from Sault Ste Marie, MI. Parker is originally from Elizabethtown, KY. They want to thank LSSU marketing professor Valerie Philips, without whose advice and support the New York trip wouldn't have happened. LSSU has also provided the trio a $300 grant to help defray expenses. Wollan and Johnson also want to thank one area business, Thinking of U Gifts and Cards, for its support of the trip.
